London fire: 6 confirmed dead after Grenfell Tower blaze | Daily Mail Online

Six confirmed dead and death toll will rise after huge inferno broke out at a residential tower block in London

Dozens including children and elderly still missing after fire engulfed Grenfell Tower in White City at 1am

Many residents believed to still be trapped inside the 27-storey building as it teeters on the brink of collapse

Residents were seen throwing themselves and their children out of windows to avoid being burned to death

More than 600 residents desperately tried to escape the flames as the fire broke out in the middle of the night

Surivors claimed there was no working fire alarm, sprinklers failed and the only staircase out was blocked

The London Ambulance Service said 50 people have been rushed to five different hospitals around the capital

Grenfell's residents warned landlord KCTMO about 'appalling' fire safety and say refurb contributed to blaze

June 2017

The fire that swept through a 27-storey west London tower block in just 15 minutes after a fridge exploded could be one of the worst in British history amid fears nobody on its top three floors survived.

Six people are known to have died after fire engulfed Grenfell Tower in White City after 1am today but Scotland Yard says the death toll is expected to rise significantly.

A community leader working to locate victims, who asked not to be named, believes nobody who lived on the top three residential floors survived and the building could collapse in the next 24 hours.

He said: 'We have a list of missing people - there are so many. It's possible there are more than 50, possibly hundreds'.

Those who managed to flee said it was 'like hell on earth' inside as they scrambled over dead bodies and claimed there was no working fire alarm, sprinklers failed and the only staircase out was blocked.
Prays going out to the victims and all the families affected by this.

Very sad and tragic, in my own city. There will have to be some answers regarding building regulations and the instructions that people had to stay in their apartments for safety, but apparently there were no fire doors etc. The fire spread rapidly due to recent cladding installed on the exterior. So many witness reports of the most horrible tragic incidents. Not even an integrated fire alarm system in each apartment so people were not even aware there was a fast moving fire. There are many apartment blocks of this type and size throughout the country, mostly in towns and cities.

I live in an apartment complex also, and we are told to stay in the apartment in case of fire also. We have a good fire alarm system that is tested monthly, and we also have fire suppression system in each apartment.

That is more than this block had. There was no sprinkler system in the communal areas, but apparently for a block that tall it is difficult or impossible. We will find out the truth about that some time. The doors were not fire doors. I know the type you mean with doors that can keep a person safe for an hour or two. Those doors were not fitted to this block. Like I said each apartment had it's own individual alarm, and you know how it is with some people, they don't bother testing it and replacing batteries. Where I live we have a fire alarm system wired into the mains electrics so we certainly will know if there is an incident. We have rules here, but they appear to have been bent or broken. The cladding was apparently made of plastic, which is why the fire spread not just through where the source of the fire was, but outside the window and spreading up the cladding to the other apartments. I bet the hundreds of thousands of people living in similar blocks throughout the country are really concerned about the risks.

Is this real? People had to stay in their apartments for safety while the building was burning, or am I reading it wrong?

That is the same thing as being told to stay in a sinking boat for safety.

They tell us that too.....

However, with that said whenever the alarm does go off everyone leaves their apartments to see what is going on. Usually it is nothing more than someone burning their dinner. Because that happens so frequently here the fire department has started charging the management for false alarms.

No, you are not reading it wrong. That is the instruction in buildings that comply with fire safety regulations, which this building apparently did, although that is in dispute of course.

However it appears there were no internal fire doors fitted, which of course would make the people inside safe from the smoke raging around. Also many people would have been sleeping at that time of the morning, (around 1.00 am), so would be unaware.

Like I said the fire burned in an unusual way from the outside inwards. Many people said had they stayed indoors they would have perished. It was those who managed to flee who are safe. Some miracles happened too with babies being thrown out of windows and caught, others jumping and survived, etc.

Back in my school days, we had fire drills, and the only thing that was our concern was getting out of the building quickly and safely, false alarm or not. Somebody burning his dinner can rapidly turn into an inferno. I would say the fire department and any manager in question had better work something better out. Unless the fire department has some "brother-in-law" scam going.
