Default Claire McCaskill Just Eviscerated Trumpcare

The Senate finance committee met yesterday to discuss the budget of the American Health Care Act (AHCA, also known as Trumpcare).

• Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri blasted the secrecy around the bill.

• "We have no idea what’s being proposed. There’s a group of guys in a back room somewhere that are making these decisions," McCaskill said.

With the daily blockbuster developments of the Trump Administration, it's easy for certain legislation or appointments to slip through the cracks of national attention. For example, remember the American Health Care Act of 2017 (AHCA)? Senator Claire McCaskill does, and yesterday she let her Republican colleagues know that the healthcare of millions of Americans is still top of her mind.

At the same time the Senate intelligence committee was asking former FBI Director James Comey if the president of the United States colluded with Russia to influence the results of the 2016 presidential election, the Senate finance committee was having their own meeting. How could a meeting about budgets be as enthralling as the Bond movie plot playing out down the hall? McCaskill, the senior senator from Missouri, let loose a rant directed at Senator Orrin Hatch about the secrecy with which the AHCA is being moved through the Senate.

"[W]e heard you, Mr. Secretary, just say, 'We'd love your support.' For what? We don’t even know. We have no idea what’s being proposed," McCaskill said. "There’s a group of guys in a back room somewhere that are making these decisions. There were no hearings in the House."

Hatch seemed visibly stunned in the clip, unable to respond until an aide stepped in to suggest something into his ear. Repeatedly, McCaskill compared the passage of the AHCA with the ACA, a process much maligned by the GOP.

"I know we made mistakes, Mr. Secretary. And one of the criticisms we got over and over again that the vote was partisan. Well, you couldn’t have a more partisan exercise than what you’re engaged in right now," she said. "We’re not even going to have a hearing on a bill that impacts one-sixth of our economy."

McCaskill's anger continued on Twitter later that day, though the Senate Republicans have not formally responded to her request for a public hearing. Slate reports that the GOP is trying to fast-track the bill while colleagues and citizens are busy with the Comey hearing.
