Default Chicago sees 52 people shot over Memorial Day weekend

Says a lot 'bout Chicago when 52 shooting victims is considered an improvement from last years Memorial Day weekend.

Chicago sees 52 people shot over Memorial Day weekend – TheBlaze

The Windy City saw 52 people shot over the course of the Memorial Day weekend, resulting in seven dead and 45 wounded according to the Chicago Tribune. The number is actually down from year ago when 62 people were shot — six fatally — over the same weekend.

To combat the violence this year, Chicago police deployed 1,300 extra patrol officers over the weekend through early Tuesday.

Those shot fatally this year include a 15-year-old boy killed about 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Lawndale during a neighborhood drive-by shooting, which also wounded a 16-year-old girl.

An unnamed 18-year-old man was shot in the head an hour earlier at 5:40 p.m. on Sunday. Police pronounced him dead on the scene and said witnesses described an unknown man who fired multiple shots at the victim.

An unidentified 17-year-old boy was shot in the head by an unknown male assailant around 9:50 p.m. on Sunday. A second 17-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man, both unidentified, were shot as well. The two victims have been stabilized and are expected to survive.

Oscar Clay, 52, was killed in a domestic-related shooting at 1:32 p.m. on Sunday after he got into an argument with an unidentified 27-year-old man who pulled out a handgun and shot Clay. Police have still not captured the shooter.

Tiara Goodman, 25, and an unidentified 32-year-old man were found around 10:50 a.m. on Sunday. Police said both Goodman and the man were shot in the head with a gun found on the scene, leading police to believe the deaths were a result of a murder-suicide. It was not clear which of the two was the alleged killer.

At 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, an unidentified 21-year-old man was shot multiple times while he was sitting in his vehicle, hitting his back and heart. He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Chicago Tribune reported that despite the violence occurring all over the city, Chicago’s Harrison District on the West Side, one of the city’s most violent police districts, saw zero shootings occur. This was a stark difference from last Memorial Day weekend when 21 people were shot.

First Deputy Superintendent Kevin Navarro told the Tribune that the lack of violence was a result of police proactivity and the placement of officers “in all the areas that we knew we should have them.” He also credited officers with talking to people on the streets instead of just responding to crimes over the radio.

“I think the officers are out there doing a great job, also doing proactive stuff and interacting with the community, that’s a big thing,” Navarro said.

Chicago is often hailed as one of the U.S.’s most violent cities, with 762 homicides in 2016 alone.

This is what extreme gun laws can do for your city.

Over 100 injured and 14 killed in Chicago over July 4th weekend...

Over 100 injured and 14 killed in Chicago - all in 12 hours on the long Independence Day weekend
Thursday 6th July, 2017 - In a matter of 12 hours, reports from Chicago said that at least 101 people were shot and 14 people died.
Quote:
On Wednesday a city newspaper, Chicago Tribune revealed in a report that nearly half of the shootings took place during the four-day holiday, in a span of 12 hours. It said that the youngest victim was a 13-year-old boy and the oldest a 60-year-old man. It said that about half of the shootings happened between Tuesday and Wednesday, mainly in Chicago's south and west sides. The increased number of incidents came despite the Chicago police department deploying more than 1,000 extra officers to staunch the violence.

On Friday, the Trump administration had announced that it was dispatching an additional 20 ATF agents to the city to stem gun violence that has left more than 1,000 dead over the past 18 months. The police confirmed on Wednesday morning that 14 people had died in the violence. Spokesman for the police department, officer Jose Estrada, said he could not verify but would not dispute the reports. Estrada added that it was hard to describe the weekend as a particularly difficult one for police. Adding, “Any time you have people shot and killed, it's difficult. I can't say this weekend was more difficult than any other. And it's a little unfair — does five days count as a weekend?"

Estrada was quoted as saying in another report that the department logged 71 shooting incidents between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Wednesday. Detectives investigating the shootings, the spokesperson said, "suspect several incidents were retaliatory in nature and alcohol was a factor in others.” The report meanwhile said that the casualties are significantly higher than 2016, when 66 people were shot in Chicago over the Independence Day weekend, which lasted three days. This, the Tribune noted brought the total number of people shot in Chicago so far in 2017 to more than 1,800. However, it added that the figure was not as severe as last year when 2,035 people had been shot by this point in the year.

Further, at the weekend, Chicago police said shootings this year had declined 14 percent compared with the first six months of last year. U.S. President Donald Trump stated recently that he was sending federal agents to help local police contain the Illinois city's gang wars and control the violence in the massive city besieged by unrelenting gun crime. Over the weekend, the Justice Department and the city announced the formation of a joint strike force of federal and local law enforcement officials to ramp up prosecution of gun-related crimes. Attorney General Jeff Sessions stated, “The Trump Administration will not let the bloodshed go on; we cannot accept these levels of violence.”

325 Chicago Shooting Victims in September `16 increase to 2,961 this year...

325 Chicago Shooting Victims in September; 2,961 This Year
October 9, 2017 | The Oct. 1 shooting massacre in Las Vegas that killed 59 people and wounded more than 500 was horrific, and terribly indicative of how much misery and evil one person can perpetrate. Similarly horrible and heartbreaking are the nearly relentless shootings -- despite tough gun laws -- in the city of Chicago.
Quote:
In 2016, there were 4,368 shooting victims in the Windy City. This year, as of Monday, 2,961 people had been shot. In just the first nine days of October, 95 people were shot. Since May, the number of shooting victims in Chicago has decreased each month relative to last year, according to the Chicago Tribune's shooting victims database and website. However, the victim numbers are high. (The Tribune data are for "number of victims, not shooting incidents," and this includes non-fatal and fatal shootings; the number of shooting homicides is lower than the number of shooting victims.) As the database shows, in January 2017 there were 312 shooting victims in Chicago; in January 2016, there were 297. The chart below shows the number of victims by month for both years.

In total, the Chicago Tribune reports there were 4,368 shooting victims in 2016 (Jan. 1 - Dec. 31, 2016) in the city. In 2015, there were 2,974 victims; in 2014, 2,578 victims; in 2013, 2,184 victims; and in 2012, 2,516 shooting victims. For 2016, the number of victims averages to 84 per week. According to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, a pro-gun control organization, Illinois is ranked 8th in the nation for its gun laws and earned a B+ grade for its overall efforts to control firearms. According to the National Rifle Association and the Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA), "Illinois has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation," including a 72-hour waiting period for a handgun and 24 hours for a rifle or shotgun.

In addition, residents must show a state-issued Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card "or concealed carry permit for all purchases of firearms or ammunition, whether from a licensed dealer or private seller," stated NRA-ILA. "Automatic firearms, short-barreled shotguns, and suppressors are prohibited entirely," reports the NRA-ILA. "Even muzzleloaders and black powder guns are considered firearms and subject to the background check requirement."

Definitely. But I also heard from other sources that the illiteracy rate is very high among criminals and other bad guys there, so they have trouble reading what the anti-gun laws say.

The silence from the progressives on this site is deafening on this subject. Yet on other threads, they will drone on and on about having to implement gun control.
