Default Tennessee promises free college to all high school grads

I'm not sure on which side I fall on this. I'll have to find out if certain grades are required to maintain this, or if we are going to provide a place for them to flop around at other's expense....

Giving free college or not to your average modern-day high school graduate will produce the same results--mediocre college graduates who can hardly do math, write, read, et cetera. Four years, eight years, it makes no difference.

This program is being funded by the state lottery, which people voluntarily participate in, so I have no problem with this.

From what I've read, the funds will be taken from other scholarships funded by the state Lottery. THAT I may have problems with.

True. If the state lottery is already fully budgeted, then the money must come from somewhere.

Post Re: Tennessee promises free college to all high school grads

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam signed a law Tuesday promising free community college tuition to every high school graduate in the state.
This isn't to take away from the incredible initiative, but to me it helps explain the situation (financially).
Also, I can't help but wonder how much of a factor "admission" will be.
After all, if the community colleges reject the student application then of course the tuition will not be paid for.

I'm not experienced on community college standards...

Now signed into law.... (bold by me)

Lawmakers approved legislation Wednesday that will expand the Tennessee Promise program that launched in 2014. It made tuition and fees free for recent high school graduates enrolled in a community college or technical school. Now, adults who don't already have an associate's or bachelor's degree can go for free, too, starting in the 2018 fall semester.

I wasn't knocking you for it; it's a debate worth having. I've just been hearing about this since 2014 when it was 1st reported.

Here is another recent article on it as well.
Tuition-free community college to become the norm in Tennessee as bill heads to Haslam

Overall, I think it's not such a good idea. I think simply continuing to offer scholarships is the way to go rather than just guaranteeing paying for 2 years tuition at a community college. But Tennessee is running a 2 billion dollar a year surplus right now so at least they are trying to give back in some way. Though cutting sales tax would be better. Nevertheless, financially, the state is a success story.
That said, they put a gas tax in place recently that was a bad thing.

I hate articles that start like this:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam signed a law Tuesday promising free community college tuition to every high school graduate in the state.

Notice the difference?

Community colleges here are very inexpensive already. College isn't. It's two separate issues.

Tennessee is not promising free college tuition.
