U.S.-Backed Syrian Kurds Announce Start Of Campaign To Retake Raqqa

U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish-Arab forces have announced the start of a campaign to retake the Islamic State (IS) militant group's de facto capital of Raqqa, Syria. The Syria Democratic Forces (SDF), a multi-ethnic opposition alliance led by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), made the announcement in the Syrian town of Ain Issa, north of Raqqa.

"The general command of the Syria Democratic Forces announces the blessed start of its major military campaign to liberate the city of Raqqa," Jehan Sheikh Amad, an SDF spokeswoman, said on November 6. The SDF called on Raqqa's civilians to avoid areas where IS militants are present and to go to "liberated territory."
I imagine the initial US/YPG steps here will be to choke-off IS resupply lines and then begin shaping the battlefield. During the siege of Kobane (Ayn al-Arab) 2014/2015, the YPG became adept at feeding target coordinates to US attack aircraft.

Erdogan is committed to destroying the YPG. Perhaps he is betting that a new US president will abandon this Kurdish ally in order to maintain good relations with Turkey (and preserve the US airbase at Incirlik).

Obama didn't abandon the YPG at Kobane, although past performance is no guarantee of future actions. AFAICT, no US president has ever supported an independent Kurdish nation in the ME.

Hey this creep needs to step back and enjoy one thing at a time... If he plays the airbase & friendship off on America backing off of very talented freedom fighters.

Who are not the same people doing the attacks in Turkey and for good reasons, as it seems each Turk Leader is also a full of deceit. And have attacked these great people for many years now.

He needs to try a peace deal and stick to his part.

Plus as I was saying playing off the airbase and his country's friendship is beyond low and would lower our standing among the western leadership and others eyes in the world..

We need to make NATO countries tell this turd off in no uncertain terms. He needs the west much more than the west needs him.

As Russia can't support his country or the population using economics means.

Turkey, Syrian Kurds at Loggerheads Over Raqqa Offensive

Quote:
Turkey said Tuesday that the U.S.-backed and Kurdish-led forces leading an assault on the Islamic State stronghold of Raqqa should not enter the city itself but merely help encircle it, a suggestion dismissed by the Kurds. The dispute between the two U.S. allies threatens to complicate efforts to drive IS out of Raqqa, the de facto capital of the extremist group's self-described caliphate.

The U.S.-backed Syria Democratic Forces, which include Kurdish, Arab and Turkmen fighters, have driven IS from large swaths of territory, but Turkey views the Syrian Kurds who dominate the group as an extension of the Kurdish insurgency raging in its southeast.

Turkey has sent its own forces across the border to back Syrian opposition fighters, and has suggested they lead the offensive to retake Raqqa. The Turkey-backed forces, now pushing toward the IS stronghold of al-Bab, have clashed with IS as well as the SDF.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters that the U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joseph Dunford, told Turkish officials during a recent visit that Kurdish-led forces would only have a role in encircling Raqqa and would not enter the city. "We hope that this will be the case and we expect that our partners keep their promises," Cavusoglu said. He said "local" fighters aided by Turkish special forces should drive IS out of Raqqa, and suggested that residents of the mainly Sunni Arab city might not welcome Kurdish forces. "We should not force the people to choose between two evils," he said.

Ilham Ahmed, a senior official in the political arm of the SDF, said the same forces leading the offensive will enter Raqqa. "The campaign will continue to be in that form until it enters the city," Ahmed told The Associated Press. She said the Kurdish-led SDF, as the main force on the ground, is best placed to decide what forces are needed to liberate the city.

A U.S. defense official said that the agreement Dunford made with his Turkish counterpart was not explicitly a U.S. prohibition on Syrian Kurdish fighters going into Raqqa. "I think (Ankara) is trying to pressure the Americans to bring in allied groups into Raqqa. We are the main party that decides if we need such troops to be involved," she said. "We are self-sufficient. There is no need."
Since when does the Islamist dictator Erdogan get to dictate the roles of coalition forces fighting in Syria?

The coalition offensive against Raqqa - Anger of the Euphrates - is currently in Phase II which entails isolating the city of 250,000 to cut off the resupply of arms, supplies and fighters. Phase III will be the actual fight for the city itself.

One of the coalition elements (Thuwar ar-Raqqa) has withdrawn from the SDF which is roughly two-thirds YPG/YPJ Kurdish and one-third Arab. The Arabs of Thuwar ar-Raqqa apparently thought they alone would be entering the reclaimed city and administering it afterwards.

So a tension between these two is forming, which isn't productive to the overall goal, or is all settled? Unknown?

As I am sure the site or two you got much of your info from might have expressed some though or input on this and surly given other info of this situation/battle.

Yet a very good post IMHO.
