Default Coming soon - goverment to tax your car usage by the mile

I know this has been in the news before, but they are dragging this up again.

So, paying 60-whatever-cents per gallon of gas is no longer sufficient. They feel that driver's mileage needs to be monitored, and taxed.

I just about spewed my beverage when they try and claim it's not an additional tax.....

I'm not altogether against a newer way to pay for road construction and repair, which was the intent of the original law. As it stands now, alternative fuels get a pass on paying for road usage along with direct subsidies.

Not sure about mileage tax, however. I just don't like giving big brother too much information.

Perhaps gas taxes should be eliminated altogether and replaced with an all inclusive tax, say, a tire tax, which would make higher road users, who would use up tires at a greater rate, and alternative fuel users, which now pay nothing, contribute.

If cars and trucks got the mileage we were getting 50 years ago, we could use the tax models that were implemented 50 years ago.

I agree with JIMBO, we need a new tax structure but it should be put "in place" of the old one. The physical laws of legislating will likely prevent that. So any new "taxes" or fees will be additional and negate any savings consumer's may have gained by the purchase of economical automobiles, gas, alternative or electric.

What bothers me most about the mileage thing is that failure to comply may mean a loss of freedom of movement. Free Movement is not a privilege. That is the loss of a right. So will we tax the rich so the poor can drive for free?

Here's another rub. Trucking industry does most of the miles on our highways and buys most of the fuels. Will this not increase their costs? Does that not increase the costs of "EVERYTHING?"

When we tax the rich businessman, he raises his prices to counter the cost. So who actually pays? Why is this so hard to understand?

yep. Oregon's been thinking about this for awhile because they have a lot dependent on gas tax. I think it's a buncha sh*t myself and if they want taxes they are going to have to bring up another tax in the legislature, cause people already paid for that damned road twelve times over.

That idea sux worse than the current gas tax. It's ridicules to just raise taxes on drivers when every man, woman and child benefits from the roads, regardless of whether or not they have ever been in a car.

That being said, the feds already have more than enough money to support infrastructure. They just need to stop spending it on stupid $hit instead.

Right, because they only paid $31,000,000,000 in federal taxes in 2013, while operating on a profit margin of less than 10%.

I'm talking about actual stupid stuff, not delusional salty stuff.

Already in use for commercial vehicles. For each state. Uses a formula of miles per state x road tax per state minus tax paid on fuel in that state. Also known as an IFTA tax.
