Strange event in a strange trial. Jury returned to the courtroom supposedly with a verdict in which all 12 agree. As everyone is waiting, the foreman says that all 12 are not in agreement. The judge takes the lawyers back to chambers and returns a few minutes later to reread the instructions to the jury. He then instructs them to return to jury room to keep deliberating. It sounds like a misunderstanding on the definition of the term "verdict". Unanimous does mean everyone.

This is crazy. The jury just returned to the courtroom again, judge reads a verdict of "not guilty", and upon polling the jurists they were divided. Astounding. Judge is maintaining his cool as he sends the jury back again and who knows what's next. The jury is responding as if a split means "not guilty".

I'll bet you there's at least two blacks on the jury. Only possible reason there'd be holdouts on an open-and-shut case like this.

Tish Clark, a courtroom reporter, says there may have been 7 guiltys when polled. The judge may need a drink.

I've followed this one pretty close and I wouldn't call it "open and shut" but the State's case was pretty good, even with the circumstantial factors. A divided jury isn't surprising, especially 1 day in, but their confusion is baffling.

It's pretty open and shut to me. The defense's biggest thing is how she allegedly mumbled to first responders "Eric" did this to her, but obviously she coulda either been incoherent from bein' lit on fire or the words comin' outta her mouth were inaudible due to the severe burns over her entire body, including her mouth.

I can almost guarantee you the holdouts are black. Ya see this on a lot of cases over the past few years. Libs' constant race-baiting and tryin' to make out whites to be evil bigots has taken its toll. We're to the point blacks will let a vicious murderer go free as long as the victim was white.

The cool but frustrated judge just amplified/clarified instructions again to the jury and sent them back. Some on social media are saying it was a 9/3 split but that's not certain. One reporter says the whole process is now "tainted" and any decision would be thrown out. A retrial would have to happen after QT goes to Louisiana to face a grisly murder charge down there.

Amazingly racist comment. Even on this forum.

Deadlocked jury and mistrial. The jury came from Pike County, not Panola. The judge was polite and appreciative as he dismissed the jury for their drive back to Pike County. This will go on and on. The defense was basic. It's a good example of why Jessica and her Kia Rio were set on fire; to burn the evidence.
