Default CBS refuses to air advertisements for 'Truth,' slams film

Looks like a certain station wants everyone to forget how incompetent and bad they f*cked up.

The movie itself has received negative reviews and a lot of criticism. It tries to portray Rather and Mapes as heroes and victims instead of the lying partisan hacks they were.

CBS won't air ads for the movie because it's a disservice to the public? Pretty funny comment coming from the station that airs 2 Broke Girls and the Big Bang Theory.

CBS refuses to air advertisements for 'Truth,' slams film | Fox News

CBS will not run advertising for the new movie "Truth," and has denounced the film as a disservice to both the public and journalists.

The film, starring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford, revisits a painful episode in the network's past -- the discrediting of a 2004 CBS News story on former President George W. Bush's military service record.

Redford plays former CBS News anchor Dan Rather, and Blanchett plays his producer, Mary Mapes. The two were behind a "60 Minutes II" story that questioned Bush's military record. CBS ended up apologizing for the story after documents used were called into question and could not be verified. Mapes and three news executives were fired. Rather left the network soon after.

Sony Pictures Classics had sought a multi-million dollar ad buy to promote "Truth" on Stephen Colbert's "Late Show," the "CBS Evening News," ''CBS This Morning" and "60 Minutes," but was turned down, said Sherri Callan, president of Callan Advertising, the company that places ads for Sony.

CBS told Callan the film was full of inaccuracies and distortions and would offend longtime CBS News employees.

In a statement, a rep for CBS said: “It’s astounding how little truth there is in ‘Truth.’ There are, in fact, too many distortions, evasions and baseless conspiracy theories to enumerate them all. The film tries to turn gross errors of journalism and judgment into acts of heroism and martyrdom. That’s a disservice not just to the public but to journalists across the world who go out every day and do everything within their power, sometimes at great risk to themselves, to get the story right.”

The film, told from the points of view of Mapes and Rather, is based on Mapes’ book about the events surrounding the discredited story. “Truth” has received mixed reviews and been criticized for hewing to Mapes’ and Rather’s account of the situation. Both left the network in 2006, and Rather unsuccessfully sued the network and has complained of being "erased" from CBS history.

In its review, the website Vox.com says “The central problem with ‘Truth’ is how thoroughly it stacks its deck. It's not really comfortable with the idea that its central characters got something wrong, so it continues to insist — long past the point of reasonableness — that they got everything right.”

But one of the film’s producers Brad Fischer said there was no agenda on their part, and that the filmmakers were simply attracted by the intersection of news, politics and business and the story's status as one of the first to be undone by an Internet outcry.

"I'm excited for people to see the film, and talk about the issues and ask the questions themselves," he said, "because I don't think the movie really draws a conclusion about these things. I don't think it's our job as filmmakers to draw a conclusion, but rather to pose the questions."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

that whole episode with Bush and CBS was a mixed bag of error and lies on all sides.

But it's amazing to me that CBS says
"CBS told Callan the film was full of inaccuracies and distortions and would offend longtime CBS News employees."

When has CBS been concerned about "offending" people other than the powers that be.

When i worked in a newspaper newsroom it always struck me how the reporters and the publishers rarely had a problem exposing other people's dirt, mistakes and sorrow with whatever "facts" in hand... and from a partisan POV. And were all for freedom in entertainment , "...if you don't like it TURN it OFF!". All with a smirk and a laugh behind he scenes. But as soon one of their own was publicly spotlighted negatively or worse injured or killed they somehow found their humanity and natural instincts for REAL facts to be presented in the best light, Plus discrete, tactful and respectful handling of the situation publicly.

Rather and Mapes attempt to hijack the Presidential election with a false story is not a mixed bag. It exposed the corruption of the claim the media is an objective nonpartisan institution. The movie simply attempts to portray Rather and Mapes as victims penalized for speaking truth to power, the false documents are dismissed as the ends justifies the means.

I haven't seen the film so what you say may be true.

But concerning the real events , Bush wasn't forthcoming or completely honest with his military record. It looks like he DID NOT complete his service. And on it's face it appears the Guard was a way for young men of privilege to avoid combat.
And Rather and Mapes used BS docs to try and make that case appear worse or clearer than it was. Whether they knew the docs were fake upfront I don't know. I suspect Rather hadn't done much investigation personally in many years, he'd been a mouthpiece for CBS news. Maybe i'm wrong there, but the buck stops at Mapes.

Concerning "exposing the corruption of the claim the media is an objective nonpartisan institution." There are plenty of ways that can be shown.
But you know the MEDIA rarely gets portrayed badly in films. they are more often the heroes or truth tellers. unless it's right wing media.

An interesting take because the movie apparently disputes the CBS conclusion that Dan Rather misrepresented the facts about Bush's evasion of deployment to Iraq.

Did CBS really screw up by dismissing the conclusions of Dan Rather's 60 Minutes story?

Of note this is a "Docu-drama" that's basically a fictional account of historical events so why is anyone really concerned about fiction is the question I'd ask.

Based upon the corruption, brutality, inhumanity, immorality, dishonesty, and incompetence of the Trump administration the White House is the dirtiest house in America and there's no known cleanser that with remove the stains of the Trump Administration.
