Default Russia launches airstrikes in northern Syria, senior military official says

This makes it twice Putin has had to step in because of Obama's inexperience and indecisiveness.

Maybe we should just let Putin live in the WH since he's making all our decisions for us anyways.

I think Obama is still babblin' 'bout a red line.

Russia launches airstrikes in northern Syria, senior military official says | Fox News

Russian warplanes have begun bombarding Syrian opposition targets in the war-torn nation's north, working on behalf of dictator Bashar al-Assad, according to a senior military official.

The official said airstrikes targeted fighters in the vicinity of Homs, located roughly 60 miles east of a Russian naval facility in Tartus, and were carried out by a "couple" of Russian bombers. The strikes hit targets in Homs and Hama, but there are no presence of ISIS in those areas, a senior U.S. defense official said. These planes are hitting areas where Free Syrian Army and other anti-Assad groups are located, the official said.

The development came after Pentagon officials brushed aside an official request from Russia to clear air space over northern Syria, where Moscow intends to conduct airstrikes against ISIS on behalf of Assad, according to sources who spoke to Fox News.

The request was made by a Russian three-star general who spoke with U.S. officials at the American Embassy in Baghdad, sources said. The general, who was not identified, used the word "please" when delivering the verbal request, known as a "demarche," according to the written transcript of the exchange.

"If you have forces in the area we request they leave," the general said.

A senior Pentagon official said the U.S., which also has been conducting airstrikes against ISIS, but does not support Assad, said the request was not honored.

I think Russia might try to shoot down one or more of our fighters there, just to show the world Obama is a sniveling jellyfish who will not do anything to anger Putin.

A "request" made by any Brass type is considered either an order, or a command, even if the request is followed by "pretty please, with vodka on top".

Aaaand it appears that instead of attacking ISIS they're going after anti-Assad groups.

Talk about a middle finger to Obama. To make it even better, a Russian general marched into a US embassy and told the Pentagon one hour before the strikes to get their f*ckin' planes outta the way because Big Daddy was takin' over.

Sooooo what exactly was the advantage of Obama tellin' Russia he'll have more flexibility after the last presidential election?

Obama should be forced to take a Remedial Leadership class. We have lost all respect and credibility. Obama is nothin' more than Putin's little bitch.

US-backed rebels, civilians reportedly targeted by Russian airstrikes in Syria | Fox News

Human rights groups say Russian airstrikes in Syria targeted US-backed rebels on Thursday, as a new report claims hundreds of Iranian troops have arrived for an upcoming ground offensive. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claims the targets of Russian airstrikes included US-backed group Tajamu Alezzah.

Russian Defense Ministry Igor Konashenkov acknowledged in televised comments that unidentified groups were being targeted in addition to ISIS, but said Thursday’s airstrikes damaged or destroyed 12 ISIS targets, including a command center.

Meantime, sources in Lebanon say Russian airstrikes will soon be accompanied by the Syrian Army and allied ground forces, Reuters reports. Hundreds of Iranian troops arrived in Syria 10 days ago with weapons to take part in ground operations, and Lebanon's ally Hezbollah is also preparing to join, the sources added.

The Syrian National Council, a group opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, told Sky News that at least 36 people had been killed by airstrikes in the western city of Homs, including five children. Khaled Khoja, the SNC's leader, told Sky that none of the four areas targeted by Russian planes Wednesday contained ISIS fighters and called Moscow's claim that it was helping the U.S.-led coalition defeat the terror group "baseless."

A senior U.S. defense official said the Russian strikes targeted fighters in the vicinity of Homs, located roughly 60 miles east of a Russian naval facility in Tartus, and were carried out by a "couple" of Russian bombers. In a video released by the U.S.-backed rebel group Tajamu Alezzah, jets are seen hitting a building claimed to be a location of the group in the town of Latamna in the central Hama province.

The group commander, Jameel al-Saleh, told a local Syrian news website that the group's location was hit by Russian jets but didn't specify the damage.

Golly! That quote feature really got messed up in that post above.

I think Obama's flexibility suggestion is backfiring on his ass.

Hairy has been anxious to get us involved in this deal from the get go. Some on the right have never seen a conflict they don't want to send our men and woman into. Now the reason will be "Oh, they are making us look bad" Which is a good enough reason to allow Americans to die.

So what, in the name of Allah's butthole, is Obama bombing Syria for?

So basically the US is backing and helping the anti-Assad fighters. Yesterday, Russia shoves us aside and bombs these allies of ours. Now Iranian fighters are fighting alongside Russia and Hezbollah to eliminate these anti-Assad forces we're supporting.

It's sad to see how little we're respected and feared under Obama's leadership. Everyone knows he's a gutless coward and joke and treating him appropriately.

Quick, Obama, draw another red line in the sand!

Assad allies, including Iranians, prepare ground attack in Syria: sources | Reuters

Hundreds of Iranian troops have arrived in Syria in the last 10 days and will soon join government forces and their Lebanese Hezbollah allies in a major ground offensive backed by Russian air strikes, two Lebanese sources told Reuters.

"The (Russian) air strikes will in the near future be accompanied by ground advances by the Syrian army and its allies," said one of the sources familiar with political and military developments in the conflict.

"It is possible that the coming land operations will be focused in the Idlib and Hama countryside," the source added.

The two sources said the operation would be aimed at recapturing territory lost by President Bashar al-Assad's government to rebels.

It points to an emerging military alliance between Russia and Assad's other main allies - Iran and Hezbollah - focused on recapturing areas of northwestern Syria that were seized by insurgents in rapid advances earlier this year.

"The vanguard of Iranian ground forces began arriving in Syria: soldiers and officers specifically to participate in this battle. They are not advisors ... we mean hundreds with equipment and weapons. They will be followed by more," the second source said. Iraqis would also take part in the operation, the source said.

Thus far, direct Iranian military support for Assad has come mostly in the form of military advisors. Iran has also mobilized Shi'ite militia fighters, including Iraqis and some Afghans, to fight alongside Syrian government forces.

Lebanon's Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran, has been fighting alongside the Syrian army since early in the conflict.

The Russian air force began air strikes in Syria on Wednesday, targeting areas near the cities of Homs and Hama in the west of the country, where Assad's forces are fighting an array of insurgent groups, though not Islamic State, which is based mostly in the north and east.

An alliance of insurgent groups including the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front and powerful Ahrar al-Sham made rapid gains in Idlib province earlier this year, completely expelling the government from the area bordering Turkey.
