STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga.

The Atlanta chapter of the NAACP officially called for the elimination of all symbols of the Confederacy from Stone Mountain.

This comes on the heels of the removal of the Confederate battle flag from the South Carolina State House.

NAACP's Richard Rose says the time to move is now, but admits it may be a steep slope to climb.

Channel 2s Berndt Petersen talked with Yolanda Shackelford, who was chaperoning a group of children from Cobb County on a trip to Stone Mountain.

"When I'm out here, and I have to be honest, when I'm out here enjoying Stone Mountain, I'm thinking about what it has to offer for what I'm coming for," Shackelford said.

But the Atlanta chapter of the NAACP has a much more serious point of view.

The organization issued a statement calling for the removal of all symbols of the Confederacy from the park.

"My tax dollars should not be used to commemorate slavery," Rose said.

Rose said his group wants Confederate symbols removed from all state-owned buildings, parks and lands.

Rose told Petersen he would start with Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson.

"Those guys need to go. They can be sand-blasted off, or somebody could carefully remove a slab of that and auction it off to the highest bidder," Rose said.

Shackelford said she is all for a discussion as long as it's not based on emotion.

"We have to look at history. We have to look at how it's affecting all people. That's my view. We are an organization of many faces. So, we always want to consider our total community,"Shackelford said.

A spokesman for Stone Mountain Park said any removal of the Confederate flags or monuments is up to the Georgia Legislature.

1) Not to detract from anybody else's discussion, but my personal interest in the matter dropped a couple points after reading "NAACP wants ..." :rolls

2) CindyB's link has a video on it I think is good. They interview a guy (happens to be black) who says we should remember history.
This monument IS history.

3) Images of what we're talking about.

The Creation of our nation came about thru the distillation of ideas discussed, debated and fought for by brave men of good will. Sometimes with their lives.

It is how we began.

The war between the states was a significant moment in that effort.

To make a more perfect union.

It is our current and continuing struggle.

The record of each should never be altered. It is our true history

We should never forget that history or those who played it out with their lives and their fortunes.

While I can understand the thorn in the NAACP's side Stone Mountain has been (the modern day KKK was begun there with a cross burning), I would hesitate to go along with demolishing any work of art. Also the area is now a state park and the kids who go there on field trips are probably more concerned with its beauty and long heritage (Creeks and Cherokee preceded by earlier humans), than any Klan activity.
Still...I can fully understand their point. I usually rule on the side of art though as I did in the case of the despicable exhibit of Christ in a bowl of piss...
and funny you should mention Rushmore. The same craftsman who made that made this relief also.
So we have ISIS knocking down the 2,000 year old statue of a lion because it is a heretic symbol to them. Lions attack people whenever they are hungry and have the chance, much like alligators, but...these are works of art and a part of history.
So yeah I can see both sides and I lean a lot toward a plaque that serves as a disclaimer and a protest and leave the mountain (which has furnished granite for the white house and the panama canal among other sites)
alone.

It actually is a rock protrusion. I think Ga has two more of them somewhere though maybe not as big. :)

I see the NAACP has a bigger thorn up its ass. It's a matter of perspective.
