New Tennessee Law Just Made it Legal to Break Into Hot Cars to Save Dogs

The law aims to save animals from heatstroke

It's amazing how temperatures inside a parked car can soar on a summer day.

According to the Humane Society, when it's 80 degrees outside, internal temps can reach nearly 100 degrees in 10 minutes. If your dog is waiting in the backseat during your grocery run, he or she could be on the brink of heatstroke by the time you return. Passersby might see the pooch panting in distress, but feel helpless to act.

Thankfully, this can now be avoided in Tennessee: The Volunteer State recently joined 16 other states with laws against leaving animals alone in cars.

Beginning this month, Tennesseans can legally break into unattended cars to save dogs from sweltering heat. The change comes after an extension to the state's "Good Samaritan law," which lets people crowbar doors or smash windows to rescue children. They can now do the same for pets.

"If you act reasonably, as any reasonable person would respond, you will not be at fault to save a life. You will not be at any fault to save a life and/or animals," Nashville Fire Department Chief of Staff Mike Franklin told Nashville ABC affiliate WKRN.

To comply with the new law (and qualify for its protection!) would-be rescuers must take certain actions first, such as attempting to find the owner and notifying law enforcement.

I was thinking this until I read it...

AS LONG AS breaking in wasn't the first, spontaneous action, I'm good with it...
