Intense Dash Cam Footage Shows Police Cruiser Ram Into Armed Crime Spree Suspect

Well that's one day to take care of it. :cool

So here's the breakdown. The suspect stole a rifle from Walmart and fled from police on foot. He was also suspected in three other crimes. The police followed him from a distance as he walked down the streets. The suspect threatened suicide and fired at least one shot into the air. He was allegedly getting close to a crowd of innocent citizens when Evil Knievel decided to use the suspect as a human crash test dummy, ramming his police cruiser into him as he continued walking down the road. The dude survived and is in custody.

It looks like the PD is defending the officer's actions. It looks rough and excessive but if you think about it it's no different really than shooting him. In fact by hitting him with the car the cop prolly saved the suspect's life. If they'd have opened fire on him he'd have likely died.

The first vid is the dashboard cam of the Demolition Derby cop. The second is the dashboard vid of another cruiser that caught a great view.

Interesting case. Wonder how it'll play out.

Intense Dash Cam Footage Shows Police Cruiser Ram Into Armed Crime Spree Suspect: ‘Man Down!’ | Video | TheBlaze.com

Intense dash cam footage released Tuesday shows an Arizona officer intentionally ram his vehicle into an armed crime spree suspect during a Feb. 19 incident.

Marana police chief Terry Rozema said the move by officer Michael Rapiejko likely saved 36-year-old suspect Mario Valencia’s life, KOLD-TV reported.

The man’s lawyer, however, disagrees.

“Everything in the video seems to point towards an obvious excessive use of force. It is miraculous that my client isn’t dead,” attorney Michelle Cohen-Metzger told CNN.

Police say Valencia fled authorities after stealing a rifle from a local Walmart at approximately 9 a.m. in the morning, KOLD reported. The 36-year-old, suspected of being involved in three other crimes, threatened officers who approached him with suicide. In one instance, he fired a round from the gun into the air.

The footage released Tuesday shows Rapiejko speed up and slam into Valencia. A second video released captured another officer’s reaction.

“Oh, Jesus Chirst! Man down!” one officer can be heard saying on the radio following the incident.

According to KOLD, Valencia was taken to a local hospital in serious condition. After two days of treatment, he was released and booked into jail. According to CNN, he faces 15 charges, including aggravated assault and three counts of armed robbery and possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited possessor.

Rozema justified the officer’s actions, contending the suspect was approaching a crowded area.

“If we’re going to choose between maybe we’ll let him go a little bit farther and see what happens, or we’re going to take him out now and eliminate any opportunity he has to hurt somebody, you’re going to err on the side of, in favor of the innocent people,” he told CNN. “Without a doubt.”

I think the officer did the right thing. A psycho brandishing a weapon and heading to a crowded area is not looking for recreation.

I have no problem with what the police did here. They couldn't taser him, so the options were; let him keep going (unacceptable), try and tackle him and risking getting shot (unacceptable), shoot him (justified), or hit him with the car. The car gave the suspect a better chance of surviving.

It appears to me the police officer did what he should have done. Perhaps he could have missed the block wall...

I'm torn on this one, as it appears to be a bit of overkill, pardon the pun. The cop was going extremely fast when he hit the guy. Something needed to be done, but this? I'm not sure. :(

When the guy fired the weapon the first time the cops should have taken him out. But what this cop did was a total disregard for anybodies safety. Had a car started turning from that parking lot the cop would have nailed it with his car and the wall. As I said, I'm some what torn about this.

No one died in this bold and decisive maneuver. The desperate suspect didn't commit suicide or homicide. The lawyers will now get involved and sue the PD.
All in all, it's a good outcome considering the "what if's".

I think the opposite. The hitting the suspect and disabling him without firing a bunch of random shots isolates the damage to the perp.

Shooting from a moving vehicle at a moving person at that distance guarantees stray shots and if I remember the video correctly, the perp was heading for a crowd of people.
