Suspect: "Hands Up! Don't Shoot!"
Cops: "Okay!"
< kerthunk >

If he didn't want to get hit by a police car then what was he doing walking on the side-walk?

But in all seriousness, I don't know what to say on this one.
Criminal charges against the officer? I would be tempted to say "No" without even hearing all the details. Unless there is some great argument against lethal force in this case. (He could have been shot and I don't think people would bat an eye because of the circumstances.)

My inclination is to let the police department handle it. If the head of police thinks that's a stupid move worth punishment (e.g. how much did it damage the cop car?) and he doesn't want to see others repeat that move, then that's the head of police's call.
If he wants to chuckle at it, he's got company...

I just heard it on the news that the officer will not be charged with any wrongdoing. No sources, so treat it as a rumor, a fairy tale, or look it up yourselves, people.

One source saying the police chief backs the officer.
