What a good idea, employers should adopt a new paternalistic approach toward employees treating them as children to be managed on and off the job.

what?

I said nothing about "off the job"
associates are assigned a department they must get done or get written up(which at WM does mean something ), in addition they pull shelves and stock, mop up spills, take customers to a destination when an inquiry is made where an item is, and fill in for bathroom breaks for cashiers. If some cashier is a no-show you might have to do his job and still get your assigned work done.
If you waited years to get off the night shift, that's tough, cause a new hire can come in and demand they cannot work nights and are accommodated. Why? Because WM wants to keep its cheapest workers happy. That you take pride in your responsibility to the company doesn't make any difference either. Since Sam died, you're just another number.
If you have been with them18-20 years and fill in for the manager, bookeeper and assistant managers when they go on vaca, you still have a target on your back and your base salary means nothing if they schedule you to work for another employee without your rank.
If they find out you put an application in anywhere else you will probably get fired, so you'd better be sure you will get hired before you go looking.

This tread it becoming the target of my rage do to its the closest one to what I am annoyed with at the moment. Why in the hell do people whine and cry about needing a living wage in one hand and walk around with a brand new
I-Phone in the other? All you need to live is food water and shelter, not an
I-Phone 6. So if you want a living wage, try actually living with-in your means first. Oh and the first person to say something stupid like "well they have kids and need more money" you are right and they should take that damned I-Phone back to the store so they have more money.

A "living wage" as a starting wage is an oxymoron. If we made enough at the start of employment to "live" why would anyone, except the most energetic of us, try to improve their station in life.
One needs to achieve by growing to learn the job and get better at it than starting wages.

Which brings us back to why Wal-Mart is raising their starting wages. Most of their management people come from the Associate pool. It is their business model. They are finding it impossible to find good promotable material in the dregs who would show up for Minimum wage so they have put an incentive out to get better material.

It is their historical method and has resulted in about 60% of their store managers coming up from the bottom. It is also why their business model is somewhat incompatible with unionization.

My previous plant manager and current plant manager both started without HS diploma's at minimum wage. It works for those who chose it as a career path. I am hardly unique.

If you want to earn better than minimum wage, if you truly want to earn a living wage,,, there are plenty of opportunities. You can put out the cash and time and get an education, or go into minimum wage employment and get one.

Or better, go civil service. Despite lower performance expectations,,,, those guys make a fortune.

They can take it back and go get an "Obamaphone" that won't cost them a dime to go along with the welfare, food stamps and rent subsidies. Why worry? Be happy? As long as the Democrats are buying votes, there's free stuff for everyone.

People need to make good decisions every day about their life and their future. Most are just taught to have fun. Don't worry about nothing. And above all do not try too hard and keep all effort to a minimum. I worked my ass off in high school for $1.81 hour. I never once thought that I could survive or prosper working there. Usually the people that apply the most effort to be successful, will be successful.
