Different kind of war? Somewhat. There was a break in the trans Atlantic cable during WWII (I?), to disrupt info from Germany. So the premise is the same. New way to distribute propaganda and disallow honest communication. All in all, though, the internet is the worst thing that ever happened to communism.  BTW I heard this first on Fox radio news.

Cyberspace is the new frontier of warfare. Just take your memory back to the 2000 US-China spy scandal, when in the aftermath Chinese hackers attacked official US military websites, including that of the DoN (Department of Navy).
