Artist's Video Game Challenges Players To Kill President

Quote:
An artist's video game that is being exhibited at a free-speech exhibit in Chicago challenges players to kill the president.

The video game is part of a "confrontational art" exhibit by Chicago-based artist Wafaa Bilal.

In the 3-D game, "The Night of Bush Capturing; A Virtual Jihadi," players are sent on a mission to kill President George W. Bush.

Bilal, 42, said his art is a personal attempt to deal with the deaths of citizens in the country of his birth. The artist said his brother died in Iraq in 2004 from a U.S bomb.

The game is part of the Freedom of Speech exhibition at FLATFILE Galleries. It runs until Aug. 22.

The game was scheduled for exhibition in March at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., but school administrators shut it down after less than a day, according to a TimeOutChicago blog post.

"The game itself is not an act of terrorism," said one protester. "But it simply promotes it."
And the media whines about a cover of the New Yorker over bad satire...

Post Re: Artist's Video Game Challenges Players To Kill President

Most everything I read about in this news article is dumb.

** The video game is not "art".
** "a personal attempt to deal with the deaths of citizens in the country of his birth"? Get therapy!
** You're not "dealing" with anything. You're wallowing in your own negative juices...
** "In a statement on its Web site, FLATFILE said, "censorship of any artistic expression is wrong, and (FLATFILE) proudly supports the right of its artists to show their work regardless of political content and previous censorship.""
Having good taste and standards is not "censorship". Having no standards, accepting any passing fart and parading them as art is mindless.
** "political content"? That makes about as much sense as labelling Grand Theft Auto IV as "political".
** "they should have a voice and they should be heard regardless"? I agree that they should have a voice cause I believe in free speech, but "having a voice" doesn't mean you have to give them a platform to act stupid. I would love to get these guys opinions as to protecting the "voice" of O'Reilly in their display. Or the voice of Fred Phelps...
(not saying the two are equivocable)

Freedom of speech stops short of yelling "fire!" in a theater and threatening the President.
Some of the scenes in video games are artistic. But when you put it all together it is a form of communication.
The author is communicating to his audience/buyers a scenario in which they may interact as if they were killing the President of the U.S.
If we were still in a state of declared war he should be court marshaled.
Since we are only under police action or terrorist threat, homeland security should send his a$$ to Gitmo or other appropriate holding facility.

Indeed. A satiracal magazine cover pales in comparison to the promotion of a video game in which the objective is to assassinate the current President of the United States.

Of course it is telling that one outrages the media while the other is ignored or to some extent promoted as free speech.

There is a problem with the cover. Thus controversy.Thats all the have in common. I saw the idiot on TV who designed it. I suppose he has the right. Its handy to have him out there where people can be watching him. And his followers. That's about one of the best ways for our intel agents to find him. Wait for the press to do a story.
