Default Zimmerman lawyer to ask Florida to pay up to $300,000 in legal costs

Sure, This makes perfect sense.

(Reuters) - George Zimmerman, whose acquittal in the shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin sparked protests across the United States, will ask Florida to pay up to $300,000 of his legal expenses, his attorney told the Orlando Sentinel on Monday.

Zimmerman will rely on state law that allows a defendant who has been found not guilty to be reimbursed for costs associated with a case, the paper reported.

Mark O'Mara, attorney for the 29-year-old Zimmerman, will soon prepare a motion seeking authorization of the payments and will submit that to the judge who presided over the case, the lawyer told the Orlando Sentinel on Monday evening.

O'Mara could not be reached for comment.

Zimmerman could not recoup attorney fees under the law, but he could seek costs related to the trial such as expenditures for expert witnesses and an animated video that defense attorneys showed jurors, the Orlando Sentinel reported. The costs could range between $200,000 and $300,000, the paper said.

Zimmerman, who is white and Hispanic, was found not guilty of murder and manslaughter on July 13 in Florida after a racially charged trial in the shooting of Martin, a 17-year-old African-American, in February 2012. Thousands of people demonstrated across the United States after the verdict.

Zimmerman was a volunteer neighborhood watchman in the central Florida town of Sanford, Florida, at the time of the shooting and said he acted in self-defense.

The prosecution of Zimmerman was largely political theater. Yes, the State should pony up.

President Obama who is white and African was critical of the jury's verdict of not guilty for the defendant who is white and Hispanic. But rest assured it is not about race.

And the state should treat Zimmerman unequally under the law?...Other people can use this state instituted rule but Zimmerman can't because some people don't like him?...

It would be fascinating to get a full account of the Zimmerman "funds" over the last year.
He's already been busted for hiding funds from the courts.
It looks like he's raised hundreds of thousands of dollars, and now he wants Florida to pay him back?

Of course, Repubs which would normally declare "frivolous lawsuit" and see this as how messed up our legal system is are more than happy to back their boy's grab for government money...

Small price to pay for a new right wing superhero.

I really dont know if Z was guilty or not. I do know he was found not guilty and hope his life goes as well as it possibly can from now on.

What I find so remarkable is the RW going all in on his defense from day one. There is no way the RW knew right off the bat Z was not guilty and was worthy of being a stand your ground, self defense or whatever, poster boy. To this day have a hard time deciding if it was because of the race thing or the defense of the stand your ground law. I just know know, but I do know it was not becuase Z was worthy of such adoration.

Florida should have to pay his fee's, he was found not guilty.
