Post Proposed US loyalty oath for students could be another image headache for Arizona

Quote:
A group of Republican lawmakers want to require Arizona students to recite a loyalty oath to the U.S. and its Constitution before they can graduate high school. They are sponsoring House Bill 2467 in the Legislature. If passed, it would make the loyalty oath a prerequisite for graduation from any public high school in Arizona starting with the 2013-14 school year.
Students would be required to say:
I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose or evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge these duties; so help me God.
....
The Arizona bill could also face legal challenges if it is approved.
Jehovah’s witnesses, some Muslims and pacifist Quakers have in the past challenged loyalty oaths imposed by the federal government and other agencies, saying they conflict with their beliefs and religious professions. Similarly, some Arizona students could challenge the proposed high school oath as a violation of their religious liberties and freedom of expression.

Ah Arizona.
The fount of ridiculousness that keeps on flowing...

“Nothing says ‘I take this obligation freely’ quite like a state law that withholds your diploma unless you swear an oath.”

Personally, I have a problem with this. I don't think its a good idea. Also, since we have a number of government officials who take the same oath and ignore it at will, I really don't see what good it will serve.

I respect the office. The individual in it has to earn respect.

It's been changed since the original article...

No obligation...Optional...

Arizona bill would ask for loyalty oath at graduation

Quote:
Republican lawmakers have introduced a bill that would give Arizona high school seniors the option to recite a loyalty oath before they graduate.

Originally, House Bill 2467 would have made the oath a prerequisite for graduation from any public high school in the state. The Arizona Capitol Times reported the change Tuesday.

"To me it's not a Republican bill, it's not a Democrat bill, it's an American bill," said Rep. Steve Smith of Maricopa, one of the bill's sponsors. "People feel that our high school kids that will be adults should understand their role as an American citizen."
I still think it's a little weird, but removing it as a requirement takes 95% of the dumbness out of it...

Good ole indoctrination. Even if it was forced to be a pre-req, I guarantee you a court would throw that out.

I'm really shocked Repubs are pushing this.
After all, they repeatedly proclaim they are just interested in the three R's in school cause we aren't doing well on those...
... except when it's their agenda, when they don't care.
