Default New York county refuses to release gun info to newspaper

If I was those officials in Putnam County I would inform the newspaper that should they sue that every permit holder and known and suspected criminal would receive a copy of the names, address and photos of the newspaper staff and their property and that info would be posted on every telephone pole in the worst neighborhoods. Because after all that is public information and the public has the right to know.

UPDATE: New York county refuses to release gun info : Watchdog Blog
Earlier we covered the outrage that erupted when a New York newspaper published an online map showing the names and addresses of people with handgun permits in two counties. Critics said the map endangered the public and violated gun owners’ right to privacy.

The Journal News’ publisher defended the map, which was created using information obtained from public records requests. It accompanied a story about the debate over how much the public should know about gun ownership.

Now another New York county is refusing to provide gun ownership information to the newspaper. Officials in Putnam County are refusing The Journal News’ public records request even though a state official said the county is breaking the law.

“I’m proud to stand with Putnam County and proud that Putnam won’t be releasing its pistol permit records,” said state Sen. Greg Ball in a Journal News article. “The asinine editors at the Journal News have gone out of their way to place a virtual scarlet letter on law abiding firearm owners throughout the region and I thank God that Putnam County has a clerk with the guts to stand up and draw the line here in Putnam County.”

Actually someone did publish the newspaper peoples names and addresses. The paper's response? Hire armed guards of course!

It does not take a brain surgeon to figure out how to use Google street views to check out the description of an unarmed house adjacent to one owned by a firearms permit holder. I pity the fools who allowed those newspaper wackos to have it their way.

Just because someone isn't listed as having a registered weapon, does not mean that they don't have a weapon.

Eliminate the homes a gun is guaranteed to be there and you increase your odds of finding the unarmed home owner.

True. But when you're betting your life, what odds are you willing to settle for?

If unarmed home owners are worried, all they really need to do is put a sign in the window saying 'unregistered weapons'.

IMO, it's the registered weapon owners who have more to be concerned with. This is basically a map for 'where to go to steal guns'.

Data from a US mortality follow-back survey were analyzed to determine whether having a firearm in the home increases the risk of a violent death in the home and whether risk varies by storage practice, type of gun, or number of guns in the home. Those persons with guns in the home were at greater risk than those without guns in the home of dying from a homicide in the home (adjusted odds ratio = 1.9, 95% confidence interval: 1.1, 3.4).

They were also at greater risk of dying from a firearm homicide, but risk varied by age and whether the person was living with others at the time of death.

The risk of dying from a suicide in the home was greater for males in homes with guns than for males without guns in the home (adjusted odds ratio = 10.4, 95% confidence interval: 5.8, 18.9).

Persons with guns in the home were also more likely to have died from suicide committed with a firearm than from one committed by using a different method (adjusted odds ratio = 31.1, 95% confidence interval: 19.5, 49.6).

Results show that regardless of storage practice, type of gun, or number of firearms in the home, having a gun in the home was associated with an increased risk of firearm homicide and firearm suicide in the home.

There is compelling evidence that a gun in the home is a risk factor for intimidation and for killing women in their homes, and it appears that a gun in the home may more likely be used to threaten intimates than to protect against intruders," wrote Hemenway. "On the potential benefit side, there is no good evidence of a deterrent effect of firearms or that a gun in the home reduces the likelihood or severity of injury during an altercation or break-in."

Guns in the home provide greater health risk than benefit

Funny you never have any statistics of the risk of being unarmed and subject to home invasion or burglary or homicide by armed perps. I prefer to even the odds or better in my favor. So does my wife.

Personal firearms are much more commonly discharged in murder, suicide, and accident than they are in self-defense. That is a fact.

Owning a gun does not make you or your loved ones safer. Indeed, a 2009 epidemiological study at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine found that people who possessed a gun were 4.5 times more likely to be shot in an assault than those who did not.
