Tiny Premature Baby Survives Thanks to a Pair of Scissors Accidentally Left on Scale | CafeMom Articles

Although I am very happy that this baby survived the how & why she survived I find sad.

Current guidelines in England don't suggest providing active care for babies born 22 weeks and 6 days or before. But when they put Maddalena on the scale, and realized that she weighed 1 pound -- the minimum weight for a baby to be considered "viable" -- they fought to keep her alive. Here's the thing, though -- Maddalena wasn't 1 pound. A pair of scissors had been accidentally left on the scale, making it seem like she weighed that much.
So if they had thought she was under a pound they would have left her to die. Isn't all life sacred? Death panels anyone?

My sister will be 60 in May; she weighed 2 lbs at birth and was born at 6 mos gestation.
Yes all life should be fought for.

The question now is "Who the f**k made up the "1 pound" rule in the first place since we have proof that babies LESS than "1 pound" shouldn't be given up on and can survive?!?!?!"...

I'll bet it was a panel made up of people who think a woman has sovereign authority over her body, but who will willingly spread their cheeks for any police cavity inspection.

I'm glad that we know more now about premature babies and that so many more of them survive.

I don't understand the 1 pound rule either when there are so many other metrics to use in determining viability.

That being said, I am not a medical professional and am not qualified to criticize the standards that are in use now without some serious research. I do understand, however, that medical resources are finite and that sometimes it is necessary to make some unpalatable decisions about where those resources are spent. I am glad I don't have to make those decisions.

It does seem as though "viability" now means you can afford to keep the preemie in neonatal ICU.

Of course all life isn't sacred. That really goes without saying.

I should have clarified that i think that the life of a human child is sacred. I wasn't speaking of a a life of a chicken or a murderer on death row.

IMO you really shouldn't need to clarify that at all. Some people just sometimes need the obvious explained to 'em, I guess.
