No surprise, its always about collecting money. I'm guessing next they'll propose an "enviromental tax" on car that get under a certain MPG.

And how do they track this?
They can monitor the GPS on your car…

Our road maintenance is paid for by fuel taxes. These cars are using the roads, but contribute little or nothing to the cost of their maintenance. Yes, I dislike the idea of another tax, but this one actually makes sense. Think about what would happen if we had all electric cars and were dependent on gas taxes to pay for road maintenance. Where would the money come from and how would you assess it? The answer is simple - a mileage tax.

How about a surcharge added to their registration? It just makes no sense to tax someone on their movement. And how do you make a distinguishment between the mileage that was used out of state versus what was used in state?

It just seems like a stupid and prohibitive way to tax to me.

What I find really funny about this is the fact that every state currently charges a mileage tax. Every commercial vehicle under an IFTA license has to pay per mile taxes to each state they pass through.
Of course, it's fine to go after those evil truck drivers, but god forbid we actually try to tax people who are paying less than everybody else for the privilege of using the roads.

And why not? They do it to trucks all the time.

Trucks are engaging in interstate commerce. There is a reasonable expectation that their movements will be tracked across state lines.

Private citizens not engaging in commerce have no cause to have their movements tracked. Especially if they aren't engaging in commerce across state lines.
