Condom use on porn sets is already mandated by state and city laws. But those are rarely enforced, as state inspections and consequent fines only happen if there are complaints, according to the LA Daily News.

That is NOT true, especially in deep urban communities. Sex trafficking is a real problem among minorities along the southern borders of the US. Here in LA, the black market sex trade is grossly understated and it is estimated that 75% of the prostitution that occurs here is under circumstances where consent isn't present. In minority ghettos and among transgendered sex workers, the power of the pimp is not overrated at all and is a very real danger that women and transgendered prostitutes live with every day of their lives.

If you gave these women a legal outlet and a sheltered work environment, you could remove that power entirely. However, certain zealous elements in our society who have more interest in enforcing their Jesus rules rather than public health and safety went so far as to put a measure on the ballot that, on the surface, appears to give stiffer penalties for human trafficking while hiding new penalties just for situations like one prostitute helping another.

That's not right and it needs to change.

No, I read you loud and clear. I'm using hyperbole, sarcasm, exaggeration to make a point.

I've lost too many dear ones to AIDS. I would NOT wish that on anyone. I think we need to do whatever takes to prevent HIV transmission.

Some sex workers fear that if they insist on condom use, their income will go down. That's a problem that those of us who care about STD prevention need to address.

Maybe you should be direct with your criticism instead of snarky side comments, FS.

Sex slaves are not sex workers anymore than women who are raped are women just having sex. I was speaking about sex WORKERS.

prostitutes who use what most people consider to be 'pimps' are the minority. Very much the minority. Do they exist? Sure. But such workers are the bottom of the barrel when it comes to prostitution and the minority. I do not disagree that legality would 'clean up' those in the bottom of the barrel, though. But it honestly wouldn't do much at all to help the majority of prostitutes. Actually, it would harm them. While I fully support legality, I also know that if what I used to do was legal, I wouldn't have made anywhere near the amount of money doing it. (and I wouldn't have been any safer, either)

Recent research indicates that over one million women in the United States earn their living by full-time prostitution. Furthermore, roughly one in every six American men has been a willing client of a prostitute within the past five years. Even more interesting and alarming is the fact that engaging in sex with a prostitute is now the third most common way for an American male to contract the AIDS virus.

Ironically perhaps, the rising threat of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases has become one of the most compelling arguments for the complete legalization of prostitution. According to current evidence, roughly half of the street prostitutes in Washington, D.C., and New York City are HIV-positive. In Newark, New Jersey, the estimate is that close to 60% of all prostitutes carry the AIDS virus. Yet, in the relatively "free market" of Nevada, where prostitution is legal, not one (as of 1989) of the state-licensed prostitutes has ever tested positive for AIDS.

The city of Los Angeles alone spends close to 100 million dollars annually dealing with illegal prostitution. In a free market for prostitution services, suppliers of labor services that are physically harmed would have the same rights to police protection and to legal recourse as the rest of us.
