Default Republican says evolution, Big Bang theory 'lies straight from the pit of hell'

Did you know Earth is only nine thousand years old?

Religious fanatic + No science education = Hilarity

Yet another person who is incapable of separating science from religion or recognizing the fact the two can coexist.

Earth is only nine thousand years old. These are the people running the country.

Quote:
A Republican lawmaker is raising eyebrows for leaked comments in which he says evolution and the Big Bang theory are "lies straight from the pit of hell."

Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.), 66, was speaking to a church audience when he said scientific explanations for the Earth's origins are lies to keep people from accepting Christianity.

He also professed his belief in Young Earth creationism, saying the planet is "about 9,000 years old" and "was created in six days as we know them."

Broun represents a district based in Athens, Ga. He is a physician, a member of the House Committee on Science and Technology, and is running opposed for reelection.

Another Republican on the House Science Committee, Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.), caused a national firestorm in August when he said that victims of "legitimate" rape have a biological defense against pregnancy. Akin has since apologized.

Broun's "pit of hell" remarks were made Sept. 27 at Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell, Ga. They surfaced online in a short video provided to Talking Points Memo by a progressive watchdog group, The Bridge Project.

Broun's spokeswoman responded to the clip with a brief statement to a local Georgia paper.

"Dr. Broun was speaking off the record to a large church group about his personal beliefs regarding religious issues," Meredith Griffanti told the Athens Banner-Herald.

A request for further comment from Griffanti was not immediately returned.

In the video, Broun stands in front of a wall hung entirely with hunting trophies, speaking of his belief in the literal truth of the Bible.

"God's word is true," Broun told the audience at the Liberty Baptist Sportsman's Banquet.

"I’ve come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution, embryology, the Big Bang theory — all of that is lies straight from the pit of hell. And it’s lies to keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior," he said.

Broun, who studied chemistry as an undergraduate, added that "as a scientist," he has found "a lot of scientific data … that actually showed that this really is a young Earth."

The congressman also praised the Bible as a source for "how to run public policy and everything in society."

"And that's the reason," he added, "as your congressman, I hold the Holy Bible as being the major directions to me of how I vote in Washington, D.C."

I just had to see the setting where he gave the speech. It's just plain eerie...he is standing in front of a wall of dead deer heads and talking about the pits of hell! Anything seem "off" about that?

With respect to Comet, see the clip from the link in The Hill article in the OP or go to TPM directly. Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA): Evolution, Big Bang ‘Lies Straight From The Pit Of Hell’ | TPM2012

This might be a silly thing to believe, true. But in the main it is harmless.

On the other hand, many people are ignorant of the sorts of science that affects their daily lives in profound ways.

People let their food become contaminated because they don't understand the nature of bacteria. (And just try to get people to consistently wash their hands!)

People purchase aluminum ladders to use around power lines.

People purchase illegal recreational chemicals the purpose of which is to alter the functioning of their brains from people without training in chemistry, medicine or sanitation.

People get pregnant or father children by accident, seemingly unaware of the biological processes involved.

People in ignorance of Newtonian Physics fail to use safety restraints and operate their vehicles in ways that leads to their deaths on a very regular basis.

People fail to immunize their children because they don't understand anything about epidemiology.

People build expensive buildings on well known fault lines because they don't understand plate tectonics.

People become professional wrestlers because they don't understand the physiology of brain trauma.

So it always interests me that the aspects of scientific thinking wherein the Public is often woefully ignorant, and so raise a hue and cry from the Academic Community, are those that are best used to promote the idea of a wholly mechanistic universe, and not those areas that are far more relevant to the lay classes.

Another thought occurs to me at such times. If this is a purely mechanistic universe, then nothing we think feel, believe fight for, love, hate, hold or shun has a single iota of meaning anyway. In such a case, why not let people simply believe and act as they wish? Even the pain they might inflict on others is utterly meaningless, an illusion experienced by an organic computer for an infinitely small fraction of time.

Myself, I believe in dichotomies: the universe is very old, and a recent, transitory phenomenon.

Theological side note: I always wonder how my fellow Christians can reject the idea of the "Big Bang," an incandescent explosion out of a void, when Genesis tells us that God, considering the Void commanded, "let there be light" and there was light. I suppose many of them picture someone turning on a light bulb, instead of a glorious expression Divine creation.

I think that often, even before they lack a sense of science, my coreligionists lack a sense of drama.

This guy is truly an idiot...

The fact that this will be extrapolated to every Republican in existence is far worse...

I hope it does not. It shouldn't. One bad apple does not mean the entire tree is bad.

What is odd about preaching in front of a group of people about the Earth only being nine thousand years old and evolution and the Big Bang theory being nothing more than a bunch of lies straight from the pit of hell in front of a herd of dead animal heads behind him?

Seems normal to me.

Seriously, I think if I happened to be in that room and that went down I would commence feeling nervous and look for the nearest exit.

It was at a sportsman's expo type of gathering. Pretty normal thing to see at one of those.

What got me is the author of the article, for no reason included Todd Akins comments which had nothing to do with the article except to tie republicans together.

If anyone thinks that this was intended to to point a finger at only one or two republicans, think again. The author was painting the entire party to two men with different views.

How much of the republican party supports schools teaching "intelligent design"?
