(CBS News) The Justice Department's inspector general cleared Attorney General Eric Holder and his top deputies Wednesday of knowing about the gunwalking operation known as Fast and Furious that allowed thousands of weapons to cross into Mexico.


Two of those weapons turned up at the scene where Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was killed during a shootout in 2010 with drug traffickers.


While the inspector general put most of the blame for Fast and Furious on investigators in Phoenix, one senior official, Jason Weinstein, is blamed for not acting to stop the tactics.


Weinstein resigned Tuesday night. His lawyer told CBS Radio News that the report was badly flawed

The fact that an outside investigator wasn't brought in is enough to question this. When you investigate yourself, the results are usually highly biased. This investigation should have been done by a 3rd party that had NO connection to the JD whatsoever. It throws the whole decision into question when you do something like this, so why didn't the AG's office enlist any one of a number qualified investigators that were outside of the JD??

This was not holder investigating himself. Why not just accept that maybe Holder didn't know?

Hey, I agree with what you say. I'll bet Holder doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.

Maybe just accept the fact that this whole issue has been INCREDIBLY poorly handled from the start and this is just another example of it. This investigation shoudl have been done by someone with NO connection to the AG's office, instead of a member of the AG's office. That's pretty easy to figure out. And the line about investigating himself is based on the fact that someone who works for Holder did the investigation and all major investigations go through the AG, putting Holder FAR too close to the investigation. This is pretty basic stuff, but you'll ignore it anyway and do your little happy dance that your Beloved's AG got to walk away from this. Ignore the fact that this was done wrong and could have easily been done right. Ignore the mutliple issues that have cropped up around this case. Just sit back and be all happy that you can claim to be right and forget about all the unanswered questions that need answering.

All I see is "Holder should be fired for gross negligence instead of fired for being malicious"...

Saying Holder is innocent because the people that work under him are running operations that he's clueless about is about the furthest thing any organization, public or private, would expect of it's "leader"...
