First, what the hell kind of assignment was this?!?!?...

Second, shows "I disagree with you" is out the window and replaced with violence and intimidation...

Third, I suspect no "hate crime" will be added due to the whiteness of the defendant...

A. I think it's a good assignment - though I think it would have been more effective as a teaching tool to make the protest sign about a PAST issue (slavery, suffrage, prohibition, New Deal, etc.). Her sign was a crappy protest sign.

B. Are you sure that it was a hate crime directed at her because she was white? Would a black kid or an Asian kid - or an Hispanic kid - have been treated any differently if they had made the sign?

Crappy in what way?...How would you have made the 13 year old's point?...

"You're here...You're illegal...We'll get used to it"?...

It would equally be a "hate crime"(which is a dumb law), but the "minority vs. minority" status would negate it in the eyes of law enforcement...

It's a conspiracy... there is a hidden agenda here.. they are recruiting these children to be haters by not letting the parents know in advance what was going on.. conspirical hidden agenda....... /sarcasm...

At best,this is an awkward assignment and guidelines should have been outlined. Also,she should have been allowed to contact her parents and not again placed in harm's way.

why was it a crappy sign? Because it said NOTHING about the issue except basically calling people who disagreed traitors. Bad protest sign.

Your confusion about hate crime legislation forces me to ignore that part of your post, redd ... it's clear you don't understand what hate crime legislature is.

Just to touch on a couple of points here:

1) It is the teacher's job to be aware of the environment and sensitive to the "climate" around her peers. The assignment should have been reflective of this teacher's concern for avoiding unecessary conflict for her students.

2) The student was well within her rights, given the information we have pertaining to the assignment.

3) I don't give a flying rat's ass what the sign was protesting; the little punks that decided it was acceptable to attack another student in gang fashion and threaten to RAPE and KILL a 13 year old over a given assignment need to be expulsed for the year. Law enforcement should be checking the immigrant status of every one of them and their families and then deport anyone found to be in violation. Give the little anchor baby bastards something to think about when Mami and Papi can't attend the next PTA meeting except by teleconference from Mexico or an Arizona jail.

Pathetic...

The ONLY defense I can think of is she's 13 and wanted attention...

This has happened in college where a girl drew swasikas on her own dorm door and a black firefighter who hung his own noose at the firehouse and blamed others...

It sounds as if a pattern is starting where people who have "a cause" seem to hurt themselves more than they help...

I'm sure there will be those who say "Yeah, but she brought an issue to the forefront blah blah blah..."...If you find them, they should be scorned...
