Default Same-sex ceremony on Army post draws fire

Same-sex ceremony on Army post draws fire - CNN.com

Quote:
A same-sex ceremony between an enlisted woman and a civilian woman on a U.S. Army post last month drew protests from lawmakers Thursday.

The "private religious ceremony" took place at Fort Polk in Louisiana in May, post spokesman Scott Stearns said, but he would confirm few other details.

Rep. John Fleming, a Louisiana Republican whose congressional district includes the Army post, said the military confirmed to him that the same-sex ceremony was performed by an Army chaplain in the chapel.

The incident was an inevitable consequence of the end of the don't ask, don't tell policy in September, which previously banned homosexuals from military service, Fleming said.

They're not good enough to serve with honesty and integrity. When it's decided that they are good enough to serve with honesty and integrity, they're not good enough to have the same rights as others on base.

You're right Mr. Fleming. This was inevitable.

Why are so many people scared and frightened about homosexuals marrying?

Personally, I find stupid couples marrying and ignorant women having children a much more frightening thought.

Just some food for thought - would you rather see dabateman marry someone he loves or Lindsay Lohan and Snooki reproducing?

Priorities.

It's hard for many people to deal with "priorities" espoused by many of our friends on the right here in the forum, when my first priority is equal rights for myself.

I can't even begin to think about "general" problems because of the blatant problems glaring in my face.

They are going to ask for Don't Ask Don't Tell to be put back in if there ever is a draft.

Many don't like that that out is gone.

Good luck with that.

If there is a need for a draft, they're not going to be too damned worried about homosexuals. They'll be reaching for every able bodied citizen available.

And though many don't like that it's gone, they will die off. Many didn't like blacks serving in units either.

Actually, there is no evidence to support that claim. In fact, all of the evidence is to the contrary. There were soldiers looking to get back in after DADT was repealed because now they could be honest about who they were. In addition there were many who signed up because they, for the first time, had the opportunity to serve with the sort of integrity the military demands.

As one of those people who wanted DADT gone, I would willingly serve if called.

And, they can't get out under claiming "homosexual". That doesn't work anymore thanks to DADT. Good thing too. There are plenty of examples throughout history of how excellent homosexuals are at fighting wars.

There hasn't been a draft since before the civil rights era (or at least during the civil rights era); highly unlikely there would ever be another one.
Society has changed a lot since then. I'm not sure they'd put up with the sexist and classist and possibly racist draft system that was in place before.
Personally, I think they'd have better luck reinstituting Jim Crow laws as they would instituting another draft.

Warfare has changed too; it's pretty specialized and technical now. Soldiers require quite a bit of specialized training. It's unlikely the army could create effective soldiers out of unwilling draftees who didn't want to learn, or that they'd even want to or be able to invest the amount of resources into them that goes into creating one effective soldier today. Plus, fewer actual soldiers are needed, as more weapons are created that can be controlled by computers, etc.

We've also come to view contractors more favorably; if anything, I think the army would just contract work out or hire more private soldiers from firms like Blackwater before they'd attempt to institute another draft.
