Paternity tests on drugstore shelves

Paternity testing kits are showing up next to the pregnancy tests in neighborhood drug stores, a manufacturer said.

The Washington Post reported Saturday that Rite Aid drugstores this month began selling the Identigene DNA paternity test. The kit sells for $29.99 -- plus $119.99 for laboratory processing.

The results, which are said to be 99 percent accurate, are promised in three to five days, the newspaper said.

"This test really is about providing peace of mind, answering questions of paternity for people who simply want to know," said Douglas Fogg, CEO of Salt Lake City-based Identigene.

Fogg said his company sold 10,000 kits to the chain in three months, the newspaper said.

The tests do not hold up in court since legal paternity tests require verification by a third party. The company sells legal paternity tests online for $399.
I'm unsure about this...

Since it can't be considered "official", this sounds like it's just a "preliminary" conclusion...which could destroy some families who act based on something that's not definite...

I say, stop the infidelity, adultery, and the whoring around and these damn things will have no place in the drug store any where.... You will know who yo' baby daddy is...

Not exactly...

Because there is no third party to verify that the DNA being tested actually belongs to the person who would use it (or it would be used against) in court, it has no legal validity. This does NOT mean that the test itself is inaccurate in any way. Just that it has no status in a courtroom.

Yes, but it introduces NON-LEGAL situations...

"If the baby is Joe's, I'll have an abortion...If it's Mike's, I'll try to get him to marry me 'cause he's richer..."

"Because of it's availability, I can now just lie say I took the test and say it's Mike's anyway."...

(cnredd note - I know somebody personally who did that to a guy on the pregnancy test and bilked money for an abortion even though she was never pregnant.)

How about the parents?...

"IF it's Joey's, we'll welcome him into the family...If it's Mike's, we'll disown you."...

I see some families turning into a home-Maury Povich show, but without the cameras...

The child has to be born first to use the OTC genetic tests. In order to test an unborn, it requires a needle aspiration of either the amniotic fluid or a sample of the embryonic/fetal tissue (Chorionic villus testing). No company is going to offer that OTC.

Pregnancy tests are urine tests... Different animal altogether.

If the potential father does not believe the mother, then he can simply ask to see the report she recieved or get a kit and swab the baby's mouth and his own. As for parents, that is nothing new. This is different with test kits as opposed to a legal genetic test? If the parents are going to be jerks, they are going to be jerks.

I work for Identigene and it is my opinion that our DNA test is very reliable. If you have concerns about the honestly of the individuals participating I would suggest to do a legal test. The biggest difference is that we have a 3rd party collect the samples and verify whose samples they have collected. If you are considering a prenatal DNA paternity test I would suggest you visit our website at DNATESING.COM or call our customer service. In my opinion what Identigene has really done is made this type of testing affordable and available to those that have questions only DNA can answer.

Do you guys also do testing for heritage? My husband has always wondered about the amount of native American he has in his blood.
