Default Rural kids, parents angry about Labor Dept. rule banning farm chores

Quote:
A proposal from the Obama administration to prevent children from doing farm chores has drawn plenty of criticism from rural-district members of Congress. But now it’s attracting barbs from farm kids themselves.

The Department of Labor is poised to put the finishing touches on a rule that would apply child-labor laws to children working on family farms, prohibiting them from performing a list of jobs on their own families’ land.

Under the rules, children under 18 could no longer work “in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm product raw materials.”

This shows just how out of touch the Obama Administration is when it comes to the average American. Anyone who was ever raised on a farm knows just how stupid this move is. Big Brother is alive and well in Washington DC.

This is one issue I have to disagree with the Obama administration on. Not a wise decision at all and does show a certain detachment from reality.

This could also possibly signal the end of the 4-H Club.

The president must be a half witted moron if he thinks this is is not going to hit the people like a skunk fart. It would be wise for the government to butt out of the control of our food, and how it is managed, among other things.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, "We want to ensure that children of farm families maintain their ability to help with the family farm, while working to prevent unnecessary child injuries or deaths." According to Vilsack, "while only 4 percent of working youth are in the agriculture sector, 40 percent of fatalities of working kids are associated with machines, equipment, or facilities related to agriculture."
PolitiFact Tennessee | Lamar Alexander says child farm labor rules could prohibit certain tasks, hurt family farms
Quote:
"The proposed Ag H.O. would prohibit hired farm workers under 16 years of age from operating and assisting in the operation of hoisting apparatus and conveyors that are not power-driven but run on human power or gravity, including manlifts and boatswain-chair-type devices often used in grain storage operations."

If you’re working your own parent’s farm, the new rules don’t apply at all, and the act also contains many exemptions for programs, like 4-H, aimed at giving youth experience working on farms.

Child labor is something most of us picture during Charles Dickens’ time, its alarming to know that it still widely exists in the U.S. today. Which means that a child as young as 11-years-old could be at risk for acute poisoning and even cancer and the possibility of brain damage due to long-term pesticide exposure at such factory farms. In 2008, Iowa State labor investigators identified 57 under-age workers who were employed at a kosher meatpacking plant in Postville, Iowa. According to Iowa law it is illegal to employ a worker under the age of 18 in packing areas of a meat or poultry plant due to various dangers. Not surprisingly, most of the workers were from Guatemala.https://www.onegreenplanet.org/anima...l-agriculture/

Thank you for your link, saltwn, but this monkey play by the government is a solution to a problem that never existed before. Sounds like social engineering bozos are outnumbering the working people.

It wasn't a problem we cared/knew about imho. Whether they are neighbors or hired workers, too many children get hurt and I am for curbing that.

this should come as no surprise.
let us not forget this little gem from last year...
DOT To Mandate All Farm Vehicles Require CDL Licenses, Could Bring Demise To Farmers Pat Dollard

then of course there's the estate tax issue...
Obama seeks estate tax hike | Reuters

Inheritance taxes and the family farm | The Agonist

these kinds of rules are only there to help the mega corporate farm while simultaneously hurting the family farm.

heck they've tried killing backyard gardens & organic farms...
Banning Organic Farming & Regulating Home Gardening, HR 875 & S 425 (Mar. 13, 2009)

then there's the notion of regulating farm dust...

even an attempt to kill the roadside produce stand...
S.510 Could Kill the Real Food Movement | Farm to Table

again, this should come as no surprise.
this is not their first attempt to regulate family farms out of business (all in the name of safety) while the mega corporate farm is waiting to swallow them up.

DOT To Mandate All Farm Vehicles Require CDL Licenses, Could Bring Demise To Farmers Pat Dollard
SUMMARY: The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) sought public comment on three issues related to the applicability of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs) to operators of farm vehicles: first, the interpretation of interstate commerce as it applies to movement of farm products; second, whether farmers operating under share-cropping agreements are common or contract carriers; and third, whether FMCSA should issue new guidance on implements of husbandry. After considering comments from the public, FMCSA has determined that no further guidance is needed on interpreting interstate commerce and implements of husbandry. FMCSA is issuing guidance that farmers operating under share-cropping or similar arrangements are not common or contract carriers and, therefore, are eligible for the CDL exemption if a State elects to adopt the exemption. ..
...Response
As FMCSA stated in the notice, its goal was to ensure that implements of husbandry were not considered CMVs for its purposes.
Issued on: August 10, 2011.

Deputy Administrator.

Well, since it appears that children who live on a farm are not hired workers, the point is moot. That's in the realm of the parents.

As passed, the bill includes the same version of the Tester-Hagan amendment as S510: It exempts producers grossing under $500,000 (adjusted for inflation) and selling more than half of their products directly to “qualified end users” from the HACCP-type requirements and the produce safety standards. “Qualified end users” means individual consumers (with no geographic limitation), or restaurants and retail food establishments that are EITHER located in the same state OR within 275 miles of the producer. While complex, this amendment effectively carves out small-scale producers who are selling in-state or to local foodsheds from two of the most burdensome provisions of the bill.
