Default LA radio hosts suspended for Houston comments

LOS ANGELES—A Los Angeles radio station has pulled two popular talk radio hosts off the air for comments they made about Whitney Houston.

KFI AM 640 suspended John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou, the hosts of the "John and Ken Show," for "making insensitive and inappropriate comments about the late Whitney Houston," it said in a statement Thursday.

"Management does not condone, support or tolerate statements of this kind," the station said.

According to audio posted online at UrbanInformer.com, the hosts called the late singer a "crack ho" and said she was "cracked out for 20 years."

Kobylt said in statement that he and Chiampou "used language that was inappropriate" and they "sincerely apologize" to their listeners and to Houston's family.

"We made a mistake, and we accept the station's decision," said Kobylt.

The hosts, who broadcast their show weekday afternoons, will return to the airwaves Feb. 27.

Kobylt and Chiampou often rail against taxes and illegal immigration. The National Hispanic Media Coalition said last year that it targeted the show's advertisers to urge them to stop backing the program.

The group said the hosts promote hate speech and appealed to listeners to call and harass an advocate for immigrant rights about state legislation to give financial aid to illegal immigrant college students.

"A temporary suspension is not enough," Alex Nogales, president and CEO of NHMC, said in a statement. "How many times do John and Ken get to spew their hate, apologize and then do it again after taking off a long weekend? KFI must permanently remove John and Ken from the air. Los Angeles deserves better."

Wow, they got suspended for being honest? They were 100% right, she spent the last 20 years sucking the glass dic.

So much for freedom of speech.

yep, apologizing for speaking the truth is outrageous, but, also just another sign of how political correctness infects our lives on a daily basis.

Okay, once more... freedom of speech does not mean freedom from the consequences of that speech. If the GOVT had jumped on this person and said, "you aren't allowed to say that so you're going to jail", THAT would be an infringement of one's freedom of speech.

However, if a private company says, "I don't like what you're saying so you can go get a paycheck elsewhere." That's not violating one's freedom of speech.

That said, I don't agree with the company's assessment of the situation nor do I agree with his suspension, but I do agree it is the company's right to suspend whomever they wish.

It wasn't a polite thing to say and the open airways probably wasn't the right venue for saying it but it was 100% true.

But...too soon. Show some class.

This is NOT a freedom of speech issue...

What a private entity does to its employees for speaking has nothing to do with first amendment rights...

What they did can be opined as stupid, politically correct, or anything else, but there's no challenge to legality or law...

If I was the decision maker at a radio station, I would have fired them for it outright. I wouldn't want the kind of PR hassles making comments like that can cause. They should be mindful of the venue in which they are speaking and the sensibilities of their audience.

I might wholeheartedly agree with their statements but I would definitely take exception to their timing and professionalism. They would not have jobs by the end of the day.

That depends on what kind of team these guys are. Were they hired to be crass and unPC? If they were then this type of comment is a foregone conclusion.

We had a team here in the Detroit area years back that were brought in just because they were smarmy. It got old real fast and they were gone after a year or so. But, the fact remains that is the reason they were hired.

I don't really see hosts of an AM radio station being hired to be particularly offensive and cras.

But, otherwise, you are correct. If that's what they were there for and the audience tuned in to hear, then it would be a different ballgame. I just don't get the feeling that's what the deal is here though.

Not knowing this team it is just a guess.

If I listen to a right wing radio station shortly after the death of a minority person or a Democrat, it's the same as going into a gutter bar the day of my grand ma's funeral. Expect disrespect when you troll with the lowly.
