You know...REALLY BIG THINGS...like cellphone plans, minivans with videos in the seats, the DVD collection, and let's not forget the number of people that let others mow their lawns...
If you were to take those away (considering the WWII-generation didn't have those options) and you'd find the economic impact a breeze...

You know I would love to just call Bull crap and be done with it.
But I have too much respect for everyone on here to not state my case as clearly as my brain will let me.
Yes, there are poor people on welfare who have cell phones, but the working poor do not have one luxury without giving up something. And there are a lot of working poor.
I see people driving cars I would be ashamed to ride in. And I don't embarrass that easily. There are probably a lot of adjustments that could be made to save a little money. But one reason younger people get so disgusted is because there's always a new tax or prices are rising. And pay stays the same for millions of people.
And you get screwed at your job if you're not real careful. You have to think as quickly as a corporate lawyer just to survive the rat race. No wonder some just chuck it all and go get drunk or drugged up.
Also in the recent past war was actually good for people's economy. WWII was the boom that got rid of the depression. During VietNam you could make your own future-all it took was ambition.
Yes, keeping up with the Joneses has become a sad reality instead of a cliche' but even those who try to be frugal are one pay check away from the street.
I am in favor of cutting entitlement programs, but scared the Mexicans would compete with me on a sub human do or die level. This country would be in chaos if we let all these people off the welfare rolls. Because we can't neglect the other problems and just fix that one alone.
If we cannot afford entitlement programs. And we cannot. We can't afford the burden of bearing the cost of this war. It's taking too long. I'm with Spencer Collins on the William T. Sherman scenario. He burned Atlanta and brought her to her knees. The psychological warfare of the past victories is what we need now. Yes civilians have to die. Do it and do it right. Get it over with. In Iraq and in Afghanistan. War is hell. But it was brought to us we didn't look for a fight. We're in one now. And we can't namby pamby till we run out of loan sharks to bail us out.
We need to find out what's happening to that oil and make it pay for all of this. I'm afraid it's going into some pockets that don't deserve it. We need it to finance the war.
