All of them were placed on probation, and sentenced to community service.
Did they expressed remorse. Glad that they got a punishment they deserved.

At least one, Kayla Narey, did:

Reading from a prepared statement, Narey apologized to both Phoebe Prince and her family during the proceedings.

Referring to her behavior as "unacceptable," Narey said, "I am immensely ashamed of myself."

She added: "Phoebe, I wish we could go back to December 10th and 11th of 2009, when you bravely apologized to me. It was my hurt, anger and jealousy that caused my attitude to change after Christmas vacation. That was when I had the chance to be the person I was raised to be. I failed."

Phoebe Prince case defendant Kayla Narey admits to facts sufficient for a guilty finding on criminal harassment charge | masslive.com

Who knows if she was sincere, though? Although she'd already been sentenced, so she didn't have any particular motivation to falsely express remorse.
I think it may have dawned on her and the others after the fact, that what they did was unacceptable in the eyes of their families and community.

A couple of them even ended up as friends. We need to stop telling kids to not be bullies and start teaching them that bullies need to have their asses kicked.
I had pretty much the same experience that you did. I always had my hand up when the teacher asked a question. My teachers loved me,especially my 8th grade teacher,he bought me books on rocketry and purchased model rockets for me. Other teachers believed I had a gift for writing when I was willing to apply myself, they even came to my home attempting to get my father to enroll me in an accelerated writing program. Needless to say...all this did not go over well with my classmates. I decided to never again raise my hand in class and I refused to do my homework,I wanted to lower my grades to "fit-in".

I took several beatings on the way home from school. I was not a fighter and usually took the beatings without resisting. One day a kid twice my size decided it was time for him to give me a beating! He was older and much taller than I was. He was beating me so bad that some of the students started to yell.."Hit him back Spence, don't let anyone do that to you". I thought it was hopeless to resist an older and larger opponent but I threw a punch..a single punch...and broke his nose. There was blood all over the place, the bully started to cry as he made his way home. This gave me confidence but a new problem arose. The toughest kid in the school now wanted to test me. I wanted no part of a fight with him,he started to whip me with a willow branch. THAT got my attention,it really hurt!!! At one point I could take it no more, I knew that I had to run or face him down. I picked up a trash can lid and I decided to kill this fool. I chased him for blocks with that trash can lid and the entire school was laughing hysterically. They still remember the incident to this very day and mention it when they see me. I started to get more friends and a lot more respect. Nobody ever bothered me again,I had too many friends and nobody was willing to take the risk of facing all of us.

Sometimes in life one cannot walk away from a fight. The sooner you stand up and defend yourself the sooner you will gain not only respect from others, you will gain respect for yourself.

I feel so sorry for this 10-Year-Old North Carolina Girl who was filled with such despair. Kids can be so cruel,it sounds like she had very little support. I pray that her death will be a wake up call, bullying should not be tolerated. Especially when it turns into a feeding frenzy by "the crowd" as opposed to handling a single bully. By then..the problem has grown beyond a proportional response by the person sustaining the bullying.

Funny how that works sometimes. We moved a lot when I was a kid so I was "the new kid" every two to three months in school. Always the same sh*t, fight someone then the next guy and eventually get to the toughest guy. I decided one move that I was a pretty good fighter so maybe starting at the top and working down would be a faster less fight involving option. So I went to school and put up with the typical BS and at the end of the day told the guy I didn't waste time on second class turds I would only fight the toughest guy in school. Next day he found me, turns out there wasn't even a fight after a few minutes talking. The rest shut up and never even wanted to test me. A few times a fight did occur but it put enough doubt in everyone elses mind they didn't want any part of it.

You guys' stories make me glad that I was the tallest kid in my class until the sixth grade. Especially since I was also one of the smartest. I have a funny feeling some of the other nerds were not picked on because they were my friends. I would have kicked some ass without hesitation if they had messed with my friends.

But then again, my school seems to have had much less violence and bullying than I hear about from other people. Perhaps it was because it was a small rural school and many of us had known each other from birth.

I think we are talking about two distinct types of "bullying".
For the record, the type that seems more common among boys- the type where big boys beat up smaller boys- may well be rectified by the victims fighting back physically. There seems to be ample anecdotal evidence in favor of that solution, anyway.

But that is not, by in large, the type of bullying that causes young people to commit suicide.
The type of bullying that results in suicide attempts- both successful and unsuccessful- is usually psychological rather than physical. It involves large numbers of students, usually an entire clique, scapegoating a single individual.
It is systematic and ongoing. Physically fighting back does nothing to ameliorate it. And finally, the victims are most often either females or gay males.
Because this is the type of bullying that most often leads to the deaths of children and teens, this is the type I'm more concerned about.
Students who beat other students in singular, one-on-one instances of physical bullying are breaking the law. The victim has the option of defending himself physically or reporting the attack to the authorities. Or both.
Other types of bullying are far more insidious and, ultimately, more lethal... and we as a society haven't figured out a good way to stop them or to protect the victims. The Phoebe Prince case was unique in that the bullies were prosecuted; typically, it is a very difficult crime to prosecute. It's one that usually takes place under the radar, and even when it's more public, it's hard to prove that a death- a suicide- is directly attributable to the words and actions of the bullies.

Seems like everybody wears their emotions on their skin nowadays, and have no method of dealing with opposition. Runs hand in hand with the PC stuff, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm sorry this happen to this young lady. I'm sorry that no one apparently did anything about it, and I'm sorry she didn't know how to defend herself against it.
I wonder how one can get pushed around while in school? Even though I was in most special education classes through junior high school up to the 9th grade, I was in regular P.E.

In the 7th grade regular P.E., I got pushed from behind a few times by two boys who were teasing each other. Another student was standing next to me saying something to me, I don't remember what. Finally, I got so frustrated I hit the guy. The coach came over to me and told me to go take my shower.

He had me come into his office. I tried to plead my case, but to no avail. I was crying. I should have apologized to the kid I hit, but did we all know any better from our actions unless we were told to apologize?

Anyway, the next morning my counselor called me into her office, and transferred me to special education P.E. Of course, that was where I really should have been in the first place at the beginning of the school year. I got an A in that class, but I was not a very happy student.

The next school year, 8th grade, I returned to regular P.E. I played well, and even one of the coaches told me that I was much better. I think they understood my frustrations from the 7th grade. I don't know if all of the students were lectured on bullying and horseplay and stuff. But I think they learned their lesson.

How did anyone but you learn anything from that? You learned to shut up and go to the special class and those that were at fault learned to just push you out of the way. What learning did you get from this?

Just let it go, I guess. You can't change the past.

Some let it go to the point of suicide. We can't change the past but maybe we can change the future by not letting the bullies win.
