The Internal Revenue Service has granted nonprofit status to the group that brought down two senior executives at NPR and dealt a death blow to the community organizing group Acorn with videos of its employees giving tax advice to people claiming to be a pimp and prostitute.

Project Veritas, a group founded by the videographer James O’Keefe, received the status from the I.R.S. in April, according to documents gathered by The Chronicle of Philanthropy through a Freedom of Information Act request.

“It will help us expand as an organization and institution,” Mr. O’Keefe said in an interview on Thursday.

Well! Score one for the Good Guys!

I wonder whose career will be destroyed for letting this happen?

Why does this group even deserve "non-profit" classification?
Or is this something purely selfish and convenient? POLITICALLY MOTIVATED organizations, that you agree with, getting undeserved perks.

The "non-profit" status, across the board, needs to be re-examined and revamped.
This article is just one example. And of course it happens on the left as well...

Why does any group deserve non profit status? Why does my hunting club have non profit status? Because all are organized to not operate as a profit generating entity. Read the IRS definition of non profit!

I'll happily post the relevant portion for you (regarding some of the restrictions on political activity)...

Political Activities Compliance Initiative (2008 Election)

Quote:
The Internal Revenue Service's Political Activities Compliance Initiative (PACI) will remain in effect for the 2008 election season. PACI seeks to educate section 501(c)(3) organizations such as charities and churches about the federal ban on political activity.

As in previous years, the 2008 IRS effort will include both educational and compliance components. This year's initiative will include:

Letters to the national political party committees explaining the law's ban on political campaign activity by charities and churches.
A letter in the Federal Election Commission's monthly newsletter asking candidates to ensure that their contacts with charitable organizations do not inadvertently jeopardize the tax-exempt status of any organization.
A news release reminding charities and churches of the ban.
Reorganizing the IRS' Web site materials concerning the ban to make them more accessible to organizations, political candidates and parties, and the general public.
Examinations of organizations the IRS believes may be violating the ban.
A memorandum from the Director, Exempt Organizations Examinations, describes how the IRS will analyze political campaign activity issues involving websites of section 501(c)(3) organizations

How is that relevant?...

Your bolded statement mentions "charities" or "churches"...This non-profit is neither...

And what "political campaign activity" has O'Keefe's non-profit done in the first place?...

Score one for the bad guys, you mean. Who decided these liars should be a non profit? I thought you were going to say the truth and slam this decision.
Just an upside down world when fraud can be rewarded. Guess the end may be near after all.

Are you sure about that?

But hell. Let's bypass the third party and go straight to the documentation from the IRS ...

[IRS]We determined that you are a public charity under the Code section(s) listed in the heading of this letter.

Are you freakin' kidding me with that question?
They have clearly waged a political campaign against NPR and Acorn.

While the left doesn't have any "moral high ground" (IMO) with plenty examples of lying ...
... the reaction from some on the right on the James O'Keefe issue is an example of how many on the right will say "screw the truth" and back a liar whose ends are convenient for them.
Screw the dishonest means...

On the flip side of that, O'Keefe's financial problems demonstrate that there are a large (dare I say dominant) number of right-wing backers who DO back away from O'Keefe's dishonest crap.

Amusingly enough ...
Quote:
O'Keefe has faced two recent legal setbacks. First, a judge rejected his request to travel outside of New Jersey (he's still on probation for entering federal property under false pretenses). Second, a judge rejected his motion for judgment in a civil suit he's facing by a former ACORN employee.
