Consumer inflation may be peaking, economists say | timesfreepress.com

Quote:
WASHINGTON — After weeks of pain at the gas pump and the grocery store, the worst appears to be over.

Oil prices have fallen, with gas soon to follow. Demand for farm commodities, like the corn used in everything from cereal to soda, has dropped. And businesses remain slow to pass along higher costs because customers aren’t getting raises and might walk away.

Inflation may be approaching its peak.

“I think the bulk of the big price increases are over,” said Gus Faucher, an economist at Moody’s Analytics.

Lower prices — or at least a break in their steady rise — will come as a big relief. Consumer prices rose 3.2 percent for the year ending in April, the most since October 2008. Higher food and gas prices drove the gains.

Excluding those two categories, prices rose 0.2 percent in April. They rose 1.3 percent over the past year, below what the Federal Reserve considers healthy. Economists study this figure, known as core inflation, because food and energy prices are volatile.

Some inflation can be healthy for the economy because it encourages people to spend and invest rather than sitting on their cash. More spending drives corporate growth, which makes businesses more likely to hire people.

I know that the price of many of our goods in the produce dept. have dropped by quite a bit; for example, over the last month or so, green bell peppers went from $1.37, to 98 cents, to 88cents, and are now at 78 cents per pepper. This probably has more to do with the changing of the seasons than anything, still it is nice to the food prices go down over here at least.

Gas pricies are going back up after a weeks lull at a 3% drop. Summer driving, dontchaknow.

Prices will continue to rise for as long as the government continues to print currency. Savings will continue to drop, investments decline, and poverty levels rise.

Yup. So glad inflation is peeking.

And if it doesn't - the Fed will print more money, because they want inflation.

Heard a report yesterday that gas could drop as much as .10 this weekend. Haven't been out yet today, but it's dropped everyday for the past week. The deep drilling moratorium has ended and exploration has been expedited, so I think we'll be seeing significant drops throughout the summer.

Produce prices are dropping around here and other food prices should follow when lower gas prices kick in.

Business are hiring at the fasted pace since 2006. The dow has recovered and continues to rise. People who lost so much in the crash are getting back what they lost.

The tide has turned and the economy is strengthening. I think the next month or two will tell us if this recovery will continue to gain strength or will fizzle out. Economist say we're on the way up. I hope they are right.

The desire was for modest inflation to stimulate the economy. hyper or continued inflation hurts the economy and is not the goal of the government. The economy has been stimulated and to exacerbate inflation would be counter productive.

Oh man, this is hilarious.
I could swear I've been told for the last 2-3 years by the MSM that there is no inflation.
Now they are claiming there is an end to something that they refused to admit even existed.
Maybe if I turn my brain off it will all make sense.

Produce prices are dropping for the logical reason, also previously stated. It's local growing season. Because availability rises, prices drop.

Fuel here is RISING, back up to $3.75. The summer driving season increases demand, and I would guess that until that off-shore drilling actually starts supplying the markets, prices aren't going to go down dramatically.

Even when gas prices do drop, I don't believe we will see an equal decline in groceries because of other factors, flooding and climate conditions being some of the major ones.

As Dammit posted, the Fed WILL make sure inflation continues, so even if other factors (employment) ease, monetary matters won't.

You just like making stuff up don't you. Try turning your brain on, you might have more luck. You haven't heard about inflation for the past 2-3 years is because there either hasn't been any or it has risen and fallen at a very modest acceptable rate. It hasn't been until the past 5 months that we have seen it spike above normal rates and continue to move up. That has been reported on by the MSM and is now what's ending.

You mean Obamanomics is working because prices have stopped going up, even though Americans are still too poor to afford as much food and gas as they used to?
