Man Found in Nursing Home With Maggots in Eye, Bed Sores Dies

An 82-year-old Florida nursing home resident who had maggots in one of his eyes has died, MyFoxOrlando reported.

In addition to the maggots, Anthony Digiannurio, of Deltona, Fla., was found with an infected breathing tube, a partially inserted catheter and bed sores when he was taken to Florida Hospital DeLand from the University Center West nursing home in November, according to the report.

Unfortunately this story is not so rare,it even happens in the high priced so-called "better" nursing homes. When you pay for premium care, you do not always receive it. Proper "management" of these homes is so important...

According to the article linked into this one...

Quote:
In November he was rushed to Florida Hospital Deland for breathing problems. There the hospital staff noticed he had maggots in his left eye as well as an infected breathing tube, sores on his left elbow and his catheter was pulled out approximately two inches.

A representative from the nursing home said Digiannurio had "constant care from multiple hospice workers and two certified nursing aides at the nursing home."

The Department of Children and Families is still investigating.
I need to know the condition of the other patients there...I suspect gross negligence and the place could (should) be closed immediately and jailtime included...

My wife has 18 years experience as a charge nurse. She runs a very tight ship but she says where you find one abused patient you will find several others.Contrary to popular opinion, some of the worst cases of abuse occur in the high end nursing homes. Bed sores occur in even good homes but when discovered, they are promptly treated. My wife once caught an aid slapping the shit out of a patient and throwing water in his face. The aid was fired on the spot..

Been there done that. Nursing homes need to be patrolled regularly.

I have to weigh in on this. I worked in Fla. nursing homes for a short time-thank God.
Compared to other states I've been a charge nurse in (Virginia, Texas, Idaho), Fla has the most awful regulation practices.
And yes, they usually charge much more because it's a "tropical" vacation land climate.
Most of the abuse is found in "chains".
After inquiring about it, I found that an individual private home can be fined or shut down for the same things a chain-store outfit won't be.
It's all percentages.
And to think, this is a state that has a big population of elderly people.
Another thing that bothers me about the Florida system is their nurses aids are generally the lowest paid in the nation. Ditto professional nurses.
The "dietary department" is a joke. I could go on, but.....
