Texas has a law (or maybe it's Federally mandated-I'm not sure) that says any inmate who tests out at below a 5th grade equivalent must be offered schooling within the prison system. We had capacity for 1000 prisoners and had to keep four places open. Nearly every inmate was enrolled in a high school diploma or GED program! That's one reason I'm in favor of better education including an up-to-date vocation option. Most of the guys in there were so pitifully ignorant, I used to wonder all the time where they got the idea to even attempt a crime. ![]()
