The unemployment rate surged to 5 percent in December as the economy added a meager 18,000 jobs, the smallest monthly increase in four years, the Labor Department reported on Friday.
Quote:

“This is unambiguously negative,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Economy.com. “The economy is on the edge of recession, if we’re not already engulfed in one.”
Quote:
“The stock and bond markets are going into panic mode,” said Michael Darda, chief economist at MKM Partners, a research and trading firm in Greenwich, Conn. “We’re going to have a slowdown, but I don’t think we’re going to have a recession.”

Will the next prez inherit recession?

Probably not...Unless someone jumps off of a cliff and the sheep decide to follow...

Do you remember when the country crashed into a recession in 1996 and 2004?...

You don't?...Good...Cause there wasn't one...

Quote:
News organizations gave Bush consistently negative press about perceived poor job creation and unemployment in the summer of 2004 but their reports were overwhelmingly positive when Clinton ran for reelection in the summer of 1996 under similar economic circumstances. Stories about jobs under Clinton were positive 85 percent of the time, more than six times as often as they were for Bush, despite similar economic data.

The media repeatedly criticized the Bush record, including 13 straight months of positive job creation, 1.5 million more new jobs in 2004 and an unemployment rate that dropped from 6.3 percent to 5.4 percent. In contrast the same news organizations consistently hailed the Clinton record of seven straight months of positive job creation, more than 2 million jobs in 1996 and an unemployment rate that dropped from 5.8 percent to 5.2 percent.
Right now the unemployment rate is LESS than these two instances mentioned....

Besides noticing the difference on how it was reported, the fact is the current rate is lower than BOTH of them...

The sky did not fall then...No need to cry wolf about it now...

I own a small business, and experienced a 20% increase in sales over last year. A couple interesting trends to note are that the entire increase was in the first half of the year, as the second half was down ever so slightly after July. Also, the entire increase for the whole year is represented by credit card sales, as cash sales were almost exactly the same as last year.

AS to how to interpet this trend, which is admittedly anecdotal, I would think we might be in a bit of a down turn.

So much depends on "what" business your in,the housing downturn has been great for the the rental business and mobile homes seem to be selling at a higher rate.Still..there seems to be less expendable income out there and that is not good.

I wonder if it isn't due to some people always filing at this time of year combined with new filers. Or something like that. Can't put my finger on it, but pure statistics don't always predict the future.

They've been predicting it for 8 years now. Eventually they will get it right because it couldn't possibly climb forever like they said it would do under Bill. If there is a recession for the next prez it would only be as if a house renter removed whatever improvements they put into the house because GW did start out with a recession. Most of all though you must realize "how" they are making the comparisons unemployment went UP to 5 whole percentage points. That's a darn good rate. The comparison is similar to what the "warmoes" do when they say that "it is as higher/lower/bad/worse than it has been in 50 years".....They are saying that "this has happened before" and is nothing new.
