I'm thinking they died because they were stupid.

I'm pretty sure it was the criminals violating government oversight and regulations (read laws) that put them in prison in the first place.

Yeah, but we're talkin' about Chilean Guv'mint oversight and regulations/laws. 'Tain't the same as U.S. Guv'mint oversight and regulations/laws.

Yeah, lighting a fire in a locked room with no way of putting it out doesn't speak to intelligence.

Obviously, our government should oversee the Chilean government to prevent this type of thing in the future.

No, just pointing out that sometimes regulations are necessary to protect the rest of us from the stupid. (or fill in any moral or mental flaw you like) I'm sure many of those prisoners were saying, "WTF were you thinking? Set a fire in a locked room?" or "maybe a sprinkler system would be good right about now", just before being engulfed in flames.
