Default Indonesia tsunami toll hits 343 as bodies found

Even with modern technology mankind can't over come nature when it raises it's ugly head. I fear this is going to happen more often as time clicks by.

Indonesia tsunami toll hits 343 as bodies found

By KRISTEN GELINEAU, Associated Press Kristen Gelineau, Associated Press – 2 hrs 8 mins ago

MENTAWAI ISLANDS, Indonesia – Rescuers searching islands ravaged by a tsunami off western Indonesia raised the death toll to 343 Thursday as more corpses were wrapped in body bags or buried by neighbors. Officials said hundreds of missing people may have been swept out to sea.

Elsewhere in Indonesia, the volcano that killed 33 people earlier this week began erupting again, though there were no reports of new injuries or damage. Mourners held a mass burial Thursday during a lull in Mount Merapi's rumblings. The twin catastrophes struck within 24 hours in different corners of the seismically charged region, severely testing the nation's emergency response network.

Islanders dug graves and slung up tarps to sleep under in one of the hardest-hit areas, where a 10-foot (three-meter) wave had swept houses off their foundations and deposited the shattered remains in the jungle. Many residents who fled to the hills were refusing to return home for fear the sea might lash out again.

Officials say a multimillion-dollar warning system installed after a monster 2004 quake and tsunami broke down one month ago because it was not being properly maintained. A German official at the project disputed that, saying the system was working but the quake's epicenter was too close to the Mentawai islands for residents to get the warning before the killer wave hit.

What ever the reasons it failed to help far to many people.

Search and rescue teams — kept away for days by stormy seas and bad weather — found roads and beaches with swollen corpses lying on them, according to Harmensyah, head of the West Sumatra provincial disaster management center.

Some wore face masks as they wrapped corpses in black body bags on Pagai Utara, one of the four main islands in the Mentawai chain located between Sumatra and the Indian Ocean.

Ferry Faisal, of the West Sumatra provincial disaster management agency, raised the official toll Thursday to 343 from 311 earlier in the day. He said 338 people are still missing.

Harmensyah said the teams were losing hope of finding those missing since the wall of water, created by a 7.8-magnitute earthquake, crashed into the islands on Monday.

So true as it sets near an active earthquake zone and most of the villages like most places in and around it are right on the coasts.

And with this warning system which seems to eithe rnot working or so close it doesn't allow enoght warning time if this hit at night it would have been much worst.

Although not near as bad as the 2004 event the number of dead might reach above 500.

And most of these are poor people who can't keep rebuilding these villiages without help from their governemt.

Who after the 2004 event should have built in the higher areas with roads down to the coasts so they could do what come a their way of life for generations.

Indonesian volcano unleashes biggest blast yet

By SLAMET RIYADI, Associated Press Slamet Riyadi, Associated Press – 1 hr 36 mins ago

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia – Clouds of gray ash rumbled down the slopes of Indonesia's most volatile volcano Saturday in its most powerful eruption of a deadly week, prompting soldiers to force reluctant villagers to evacuate amid fears of a larger blast.

On the other side of the archipelago, storms again prevented aid deliveries to increasingly desperate survivors of a tsunami — including a teenage girl with an open chest wound — that killed 413 people in the Mentawai islands. Relief workers found some comfort, however, when the number of missing dropped by half to 163 as searchers discovered more survivors and villagers who had fled to the hills returned home.

The simultaneous catastrophes have severely tested the emergency response network. Indonesia lies in the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a cluster of fault lines prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.

Mount Merapi, which sprang back to life early this week, unleashed a terrifying 21-minute eruption early Saturday, followed by more than 350 volcanic tremors and 33 ash bursts, said Surono, chief of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation.

The latest spewing of the notoriously unpredictable volcano forced the temporary closure of an airport and claimed another life, bringing the death toll this week to 36.

At least 47,000 people have fled the mountain's wrath, according to the National Disaster Management Agency. Government camps well away from the base were overflowing with refugees, including most of the 11,000 people who live on the mountain's fertile slopes. They were told Saturday, with signs the danger level was climbing, that they should expect to stay for three more weeks.

Indonesia volcano shoots new blast; 21 more rumble

By SLAMET RIYADI, Associated Press Slamet Riyadi, Associated Press – 22 mins ago

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia – Deafening explosions of hot gas rattled evacuees miles (kilometers) from an Indonesian volcano Monday, the latest eruption in a deadly week. The country reported increased rumblings at 21 other active mountains, raising questions about what's causing the uptick along some of the world's most prolific fault lines.

No new casualties were reported in Mount Merapi's new blast, which came as Indonesia also struggles to respond to an earthquake-generated tsunami that devastated a remote chain of islands. The two disasters unfolding on opposite ends of country have killed nearly 500 people and strained the government's emergency response network. In both events, the military has been called in to help.

Merapi has killed 38 people since it started erupting a week ago. Monitoring officials have also raised alert levels at some of the 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, with two under watch for possible eruption within two weeks and 19 showing increased activity — more than double the usual number on the watch list, an official said.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago of 235 million people, is prone to earthquakes and volcanos because it sits along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a horseshoe-shaped string of faults that lines the western and eastern Pacific. Scientists could not say for certain what was causing the increased volcanic activity, though two theorized the earth's tectonic plates could be realigning and one noted growing evidence that volcanos can affect one other.

About 69,000 villagers have been evacuated from the area around Merapi's once-fertile slopes — now blanketed by gray ash — in central Java, 250 miles (400 kilometers) east of Jakarta, the capital.

Booming explosions sounded during Monday's eruption, which shot massive clouds from the glowing cauldron and sent ash cascading nearly four miles (six kilometers) down the southeastern slopes, said Subrandrio, an official in charge of monitoring Merapi's activity.

Human tragedies are obviously only news when there's a Republican in the Presidency.

Oh wait, Haiti. Oh nevermind. No one cares any longer.

Oh wait BP oil spill. Anderson Cooper can't film the human tragedy there.

Hummm Michael1 how close to the coast do you live in N.C. ? I wish no harm to anyone but these things do kill people.

I have heard that an Island in the Carney Island's has a big tear donw it's spin which clould cause it to slide into the Ocean with a very large tsunami, which would hit our shores a while later.

So to call these reports unworthy Media Driven **** is just your opinion. And I ask what if it does happen and you feel some of the impact.

Will you then have an opinion besides "who care"?

If we learned anything in recent years we now know Libtard "scientist" will say anything to obtain funding. See East Anglia University.
The theory isn't even true. It couldn't happen in at least 10,000 years unless the Island suddenly starts rising rapidly.

OR ERUPT like the 4 or 6 I have posted on in the past 2 weeks or so..

Yellowstone is overdue based on the facts learned but might not blow it's top till years from now.

Then again it might blow in a day or two.. Just saying. All the studies mean little when one goes off.

Huge volcanic blast spurs more Indonesians to flee

By SLAMET RIYADI, Associated Press Slamet Riyadi, Associated Press – 8 mins ago

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia – A deadly Indonesian volcano spewing lava and smoke for more than a week erupted Wednesday with its biggest blast yet, shooting searing ash miles into the air as soldiers hastily evacuated villages and emergency shelters.

One scientist warned the worst may be yet to come.

Women screamed and children cried as they were loaded into trucks while rocks and debris rained from the sky. Several abandoned homes were set ablaze and the carcasses of incinerated cattle littered the scorched slopes.

No new casualties were reported immediately after the booming explosion, which lasted more than an hour.

"This is an extraordinary eruption, triple from the first" on Oct. 26, said Surono, a state volcanologist.

More than 70,000 villagers have been evacuated from the 9,700-foot (3,000-meter) Mount Merapi's once-fertile slopes since it began erupting just over a week ago, killing 38 people and injuring dozens, most with severe burns.

Almost all have packed into crowded camps well away from the base.

Djarot Nugroho, the head of Central Java's disaster management agency, said funding for the refugees would run out in five days unless a national disaster was declared.
