Arizona Police Routinely Asking for Proof of Citizenship

PHOENIX — Police in suburban Scottsdale have begun routinely asking for proof of citizenship from every suspect they arrest and turning those who are in this country illegally over to federal immigration officials.

The procedure was started Oct. 15, a result of the September killing of Phoenix police officer Nick Erfle by an illegal immigrant, Erik Jovani Martinez.

Scottsdale police had arrested Martinez on a misdemeanor charge 16 months earlier but they released him then because they didn't know he was an illegal immigrant who had been twice deported.

Erfle's killing "caused us to look at what were asking suspects," Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark said. "If we arrest someone and then find that we called ICE (Customs and Immigration Enforcement) and they put a hold on them, then we know they have been deported and are back again."

Martinez was later killed by police after he stole a car and took a hostage, authorities said.

Now police in the affluent suburb ask every suspect about their citizenship, have ICE agents pick up those who are in this country illegally, and keep a database of possible illegal immigrants in case they turn up again.

Every suspect should be asked for proof of citizenship! They can refuse to answer and be immediately deported but we have a responsibility to ensure security for our citizens.Either the WoT is just a "bumper sticker" or it's a wake up call for security and sovernty! We are not talking about taking away liberty,it's all about "preserving" liberty and life for "our" citizens.

Finally some common sense...

Always found it stupid that a cop can ask to see if the car is legal but not the person driving it...

I'll have to admit, I think it makes sense to do--however--if they start making it a habit to check people who have not committed any crimes, THAT is when the line needs to be drawn.

As far as I know, law enforcement must have a reason to ask for identification whether or not they think someone is illegal...

They couldn't ask a very white redhead (like me) for ID unless I've done something first...

Kinda like seatbelt laws, where cops can't stop you for not wearing one, but they CAN tack on a ticket for not wearing one if they stopped you for something else...

Actually, around here they can ticket you JUST for not wearing a seatbelt.

Don't know about Kizzume (do you live in Kissimmee, Kizzume?), but they do it now in Oregon.

Kizzume = (kih-zoom) = a mispronunciation of the word "music" backwards. It'd actually be moozik backwards.

I live in Tacoma, WA USA.

The same is true in the state of Michigan. I have no problem with asking a suspects citizanship. Could this be abused? absolutely but look what happens when we are too timid to ask questions..thousands die...

In Michigan, the seatbelt law started out as a secondary offense, where you would be ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt if you were stopped for another reason. But now, it is a primary offense, and ticketed for that reason alone.

"It may be that it is the obnoxious thing in its mildest and least repulsive form; but illegitimate and unconstitutional practices get their first footing in that way, namely, by silent approaches and slight deviations from legal modes of procedure. ...It is the duty of courts to be watchful for the constitutional rights of the citizen, and against any stealthy encroachments thereon."
