Default Pope visit: six man arrested over alleged assassination plot

Quote:
Police earlier arrested five suspected Islamist terrorists, working as street cleaners in London, during raids at 5.45am at a rubbish depot in central London based on an intelligence tip off received overnight.

The suspects, aged 26, 27, 36, 40 and 50 were arrested by officers from Scotland Yard’s Counter Terrorism Command on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

The sixth man, aged 29, was arrested at 1.45pm at a house in north London. Police said they were searching eight homes in north and east London and two businesses in central London.

The depot where the street cleaners worked they worked is less than a mile from Hyde Park where the Pope was due to hold a prayer vigil tomorrow evening.

As street cleaners they would have been able to move relatively freely and inconspicuously through the London crowds.

Westminster City Council said the men worked for Veolia Environmental Services, a contractor which employs 650 on-street staff to keep Westminster's streets clean and free from rubbish.

The men have been taken to a central London police station where they will be interviewed by detectives.

Searches are being carried out under the Terrorism Act 2000 at the rubbish depot and at residential premises in north and east London.

Sources said that initial searches had not uncovered any bomb-making or hazardous items.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said the arrests were made after they received “information” and added: “Following initial inquiries by detectives a decision was made to arrest the five men.”

Pope Benedict XVI’s security arrangements were reviewed following the arrests and Scotland Yard said “we are satisfied that our current policing plan remains appropriate. The itinerary has not changed.”

There was no change to the terrorism threat level which remains at “severe” meaning that a terrorist attack is highly likely.

The Pope continued with his engagements, unaffected by the developments.

The Pope has been informed of the arrests, Vatican spokesman Fr Lombardi said. He told reporters there was "no need to change anything about the programme with the Pope and the security for this trip".

"The Pope is calm and happy and we go on with this trip with courage and joy," he added.

"We are totally confident in the work of the police and Scotland Yard."

A multimillion-pound operation is in place to protect the Pope during his tour of Scotland, London and the West Midlands, with thousands of officers involved.

The pontiff is also protected by members of the Swiss Guard.

He often travels in the Popemobile, which has a bulletproof glass enclosure. The Vatican abandoned the use of an open-topped vehicle after the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in 1981.

A spokesman for the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales said: "We have absolute confidence in the security operation to protect both the Pope and the public.

"The Pope is enjoying a wonderful visit, warmly welcomed wherever he goes."

Oh, they're Muslims? Well, cue the outrage from the Muslim Community that these assassins were acting in the name of the Religion of Peace!

Oh, wait I'm sorry, the outrage is actually over the public perception that Islam is a Religion of violence, misogyny and conquest. My bad!

Wait, both Beck and the Pope are German. I don't know what that means, yet.

Arrested men 'no credible threat' to Pope

Police sources say officers think there was "no credible threat" to the Pope after six arrested men were questioned.

Searches have finished without the discovery of anything significant.

The six - who work as street cleaners in Westminster - were arrested after they were overheard in the works canteen apparently plotting an attack.

The Metropolitan Police has refused to confirm reports that the men were joking, saying they had to investigate what might have been a genuine threat.

The men are employed by Veolia Environment Services, a cleaning company contracted by Westminster Council.

At least five of the men are not British nationals. Most are thought to be Algerian.

The men, aged between 26 and 50, were arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism on Friday.

Armed officers arrested the first five men at the company's Chiltern Street depot in west London as they were preparing to go on shift. A sixth man was later taken into custody.

Police officers searched eight homes in north and east London and two business premises in central London, including a street cleaning depot.

Searches of the premises had now been completed and had not revealed any weapons or suspicious materials.

In the statement, the Metropolitan Police said policing arrangements for the papal visit were reviewed following the arrests, and that police were satisfied that the current policing plan for the Pope's visit remained appropriate.

"The itinerary has not changed. There is no change to the UK threat level," the statement added.

The current official threat level in the UK is "severe", which means that security chiefs believe a terror attack is "highly likely".

In all, the policing bill for the papal visit is expected to top £1m.

Consider the parallel of the Colorado arrest on Obama's life, which some Republicans excused the refusal to prosecute...

The Colorado group were caught WITH WEAPONS and CONFESSED they were going to carry out the acts, and the Republican DA refused to prosecute...

Given those standards, these guys should be given an apology for wasting their time and let go, right?

Not yet. In todays world one doesn't joke about things like this... And in the case you mentioned could not the JD had taken on the case.

I would think Holder would have. Plus a lot of people in Colorado have guns to hunt or target shoot.

So why wasn't it brought to the Federal level?

I'm sorry.
Can you elaborate on the initials "JD"?

And furthermore, while I appreciate your candor on "in today's world one doesn't joke about things like this", others here have obviously given leeway for people who pack guns and offer confessions.

Which brings me back to the confession.
It's not like these guys were stopped and then arrested solely cause guns were found in the car.

It went a LOT further than that...
The investigation was triggered after police in the Denver suburb of Aurora stopped a truck that was swerving erratically early Sunday. Police say they found two high-powered rifles, two wigs, camouflage clothing, a bulletproof vest and two walkie-talkies in the truck. They say they also found three IDs in other people's names and what they believe to be methamphetamine.
....
According to Brian Masss of Denver's KCNC Channel 4, under questioning Gartrell implicated two other men -- Nathan Johnson, who is 32, and Shawn Adolph, who is 33 -- and Johnson's girlfriend, Natasha Gromack. Johnson also reportedly confirmed the plot to FBI and Secret Service interrogators.

One of the men, Adolph, reportedly wore a ring with the Nazi swastika. He was injured when he jumped out of a hotel window fleeing Secret Service agents. All are now in custody on drug and weapons charges.
Obama Assassination Plot Investigated, No Credible Threat Found
Eventually, however, he admitted the other two men had planned a killing when he said, "Yeah, they were here to do that, to assassinate him ... it's about as hard for me to swallow as it is for you to understand."[5] Johnson said the plan was for Adolf to, "shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a [rifle] sighted at 750 yards".[10][11] Johnson said the shooting was to take place during Obama's acceptance speech on August 28 at the Democratic National Convention in INVESCO Field at Mile High. Johnson told the station, "He don't belong in political office. Blacks don't belong in political office. He ought to be shot."[4][11][13] Johnson said Adolf previously made comments about killing any African American who ran for president: "He made a comment in the past. I can't honestly tell you how long ago in the past, that he didn't believe a black should be the leader of this country."[5] According to Johnson, Adolf said he was already wanted for other crimes, so it "wouldn't matter if he killed Obama".[9] Johnson also claimed Adolf said he would never be taken alive and wanted to "go down in a blaze of glory".[9] Law enforcement sources told KCNC-TV that one of the suspects "was directly asked if they had come to Denver to kill Obama. He responded in the affirmative."[13]

So please.
Let's drop the pretense here.
There is a LOT to this Colorado issue.

I meant the Justice Department... And I had not heard about it, myself.

I still think the J.D. should have taken the case. You understand more of this than I.

But I always thought the Feds could have grounds to over-ride state laws. And in a case like this with the POTUS as a target, I can't understand why it was just let go.

I wasn't being a smart azz, I just don't understand why not having the charges upgraded and taken to the Federal level...

Thanks for the links.
