I have looked for days of some good news out of Japan. And today I found one.

Woman, grandson found under rubble in Japan

16-year-old boy leads rescuers to 80-year-old grandmother

TOKYO The voice rang out suddenly, unexpectedly, from the wreckage left behind by the monstrous earthquake and tsunami that ripped through the country's northeast nine days ago.

"Please help! Please help!"

There, on the roof of his collapsed wooden home, stood a shivering Jin Abe, so cold that he had draped layers of towels around his body. His grandmother, Sumi Abe, was trapped inside, too, the 16-year-old told the team of Ishinomaki police officers who had been patrolling the hard-hit city on Sunday.

Sixteen-year-old Jin Abe is carried from the rubble on Sunday.

The two had been stuck there since the March 11 magnitude-9.0 quake struck off the coast of Japan, triggering a massive tsunami that obliterated much of the northeastern coastline. Their neighborhood, too, lay in ruins.

I just thought this was a neat story...

Russian boy finds message in bottle after 24 years

Quote:
MOSCOW (AFP) A 13-year-old Russian boy found a message in a bottle on a beach and was reunited with its German author, who wrote the note 24 years ago, tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda reported Wednesday.

Daniil Korotkikh found the beer bottle earlier this month when walking on the beach near Kaliningrad and his father translated the note inside, which was dated September 7, 1987, Komsomolskaya Pravda reported.

"When I was walking along, I spotted a bottle in the dunes and saw that there was a note inside," Korotkikh told Russian television channel NTV. "Only a few people are lucky enough to find a letter in a bottle."

The letter was signed by five-year-old Frank Uesbeck, who enclosed his address in Coesfeld in western Germany.

Russian journalists tracked down Uesbeck, now 29, a married bank worker, who said he barely remembered sending the bottle with the note, which was written by his father and he signed in shaky letters.

"I was shocked," Uesbeck told NTV television.

His parents still live at the address shown in the letter and his father showed a photograph of Frank holding the bottle, which they threw into the sea while travelling to Denmark.

"It's just incredible. Can it really be possible that the letter is still readable after so many years in the water?" Uesbeck said in an interview translated into Russian.

Korotkikh and Uesbeck were shown speaking via a video link and the Russian schoolboy showed off the letter, which he has framed.

Orangutans Find Each Other In Central Kansas

Reporter: Associated Press
Email Address: news@kake.com

Sunday, July 3, 2011

There's love in the air at the Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure park in central Kansas.

Only in Kansas...

Rusa, the 31-year-old female orangutan has become smitten with a
34-year-old 300-pound male orangutan named Clyde, who arrived last month from the San Diego Zoo. The Salina Journal reports that Clyde is a replacement for Robbie, an 18-year-old orangutan who was transferred to the St. Louis Zoo.

Lynne Kearney, an ape keeper at Rolling Hills, said that ever since Clyde and Rusa, were introduced they've been inseparable and that Clyde lavishes attention on Rusa.

Rolling Hills ape keeper Deb Zerbe said when Clyde was introduced to Rusa, the ape keepers were pleasantly surprised to see how quickly the orangutans bonded. Officials say the two animals could even have a baby orangutan.

7 Pieces of Good News Nobody Is Reporting

We recently pointed out that the news media has a filtering process that only lets the bad stuff through. When they do break up the monotony with something lighthearted, it's always something pointless and inconsequential, like that thing last week with the monkey that learned to fly a helicopter.
But there actually is good news out there -- on some of the big issues of the day, no less. For instance, did you know ...
