Obama didn't grow up poor. His grandparents provided him with a comfortable, loving home life including a private school. Grandpa pulled some strings to get him admitted to the exclusive Punahou school. Typical white person grandma paid his tuition.

Of course he did suffer the degradation of actually working PT in the private sector as an ice cream scooper for spending money. It's his only private sector business experience.
