Default Reid Compares Opponents of Health Care Reform to Supporters of Slavery

yep, but remember folks it's the republicans who are mean spirited.....
================================================== =======

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took his GOP-blasting rhetoric to a new level Monday, comparing Republicans who oppose health care reform to lawmakers who clung to the institution of slavery more than a century ago.

The Nevada Democrat, in a sweeping set of accusations on the Senate floor, also compared health care foes to those who opposed women's suffrage and the civil rights movement -- even though it was Sen. Strom Thurmond, then a Democrat, who unsuccessfully tried to filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and it was Republicans who led the charge against slavery.

Senate Republicans on Monday called Reid's comments "offensive" and "unbelievable."

But Reid argued that Republicans are using the same stalling tactics employed in the pre-Civil War era.

"Instead of joining us on the right side of history, all the Republicans can come up with is, 'slow down, stop everything, let's start over.' If you think you've heard these same excuses before, you're right," Reid said Monday. "When this country belatedly recognized the wrongs of slavery, there were those who dug in their heels and said 'slow down, it's too early, things aren't bad enough.'"

He continued: "When women spoke up for the right to speak up, they wanted to vote, some insisted they simply, slow down, there will be a better day to do that, today isn't quite right.

"When this body was on the verge of guaranteeing equal civil rights to everyone regardless of the color of their skin, some senators resorted to the same filibuster threats that we hear today."

I heard part of the speech and he was giving an analogy of when it's the right thing to go against the establishment and do something different for the good of others. Nothing more.
But spin away, fellers!

Harry's problem is that his solution is simply take more money away from people and do nothing about the REAL problem facing healthcare in this country - lack of availability. You've gotta solve that piece before any of the legislation being rammed down our throats can do ANY good. Until you can actually provide everyopne with healthcare, charging them to do so is complete fraud. It's like the Dems promising everyone in America an apple, but only having enough apples for half the people. Before they make the promise, they need to plant more orchards, not tax people to pay for something that it's purely impossible to deliver.

You keep mentioning availability so I assume it is a real problem in your neck of the woods. I may have mentioned it before, but we have good access to regular doctors and specialists where I live.

There's a nation-wide shortage of healthcare providers. Just becaude your little neck of the woods had adequate access does not mean that the rest of the country has it...

There's one study bouncing around that states that America has more helathcare providers per capita than we need, but this study includes all specialists in the mix. When you look at primary healthcare providers per capita, we are in dire need of more good healthcare professionals. This is especially evident in low income areas - both rural and urban. In higher income areas, the level of healthcare service is much higher and even excessive in some cases. The bottom line is that if we spread out all the primary healthcare professionals evenly across all income brackets, we'd still come up short. America has a lot of holes in it's healthcare system that need plugging. For example: I live in a small town of about 25,000 people (redmond OR), but there's no longer a urologist here. If I need to go to a urologist, I get to drive 20 miles to Bend.

The best Senators don't want to be the leader so they don't have to play politics and can focus on writing legislation and voting their conscience.

Twenty miles is not that far. It's roughly a 30-45 minute drive.

When I lived in Alaska, if I needed to see a profession that was anything more intensive than a Navy Corpsman, I got to get on a plane and fly for 2 hours to Providence in Anchorage.

20 minutes. Pffft.
