    If you are interested in the Ft (not Fortress) Monroe story, here's what to Google
    Poe + Ft Monroe (Also just Ft Monroe)
    Poe + the Cask of Amontillado
    Also Ft Wool ( A companion Fort built on the other side of the Bay at Hampton Roads.
    I've been there several times, so the walled up officer part may have been something I remember.
    It's an interesting piece of American history. I think the complex was constructed after the 1812 War when the British sailed up the Chesapeake and the US guns could not reach them. The forts enabled the Bay to be protected.
    Monroe is not actually on an island, but is connected to the peninsula by a shoal. The shoal may have been the early access method.
    Fort Wool, is located on an island.
    Interestingly, Monroe housed Davis for a while, and the lead supervisor during construction was Lee.
