Ok, I live in NC, and work in a tax office. Pretty much everyone pays state taxes, few people get refunds (very few people are allowed to claim exemptions under the new law). Also, they lowered taxes but raised just about every fee in the book. Ask anyone in NC, and they will tell you their car registration doubled from one year to the next, as an example. They are also charging sales tax for services now, in a very complicated law passed last year that they are still explaining to business owners. Schools are ranked at the bottom of the nation and underfunded, roads are terrible (road crew staffs have been reduced to maybe 10 people for an entire county), and when you buy a new car, everyone knows your tag will be late from the state because they don't have enough people to process them. Tax cuts haven't benefited anyone I know, here, and have made life much worse.--Anna Meyers on the North Carolina tax cut

I hope you were just watching the Voice. If not you just missed the best contestant ever. And then Christina going out on stage and doing a duet with him not planned. As Blake said it couldn't have been better even if they practiced for a month. I wished I had it taped.

I send this because I think you said you watch the show.

If you are interested in the Ft (not Fortress) Monroe story, here's what to Google
Poe + Ft Monroe (Also just Ft Monroe)
Poe + the Cask of Amontillado
Also Ft Wool ( A companion Fort built on the other side of the Bay at Hampton Roads.
I've been there several times, so the walled up officer part may have been something I remember.
It's an interesting piece of American history. I think the complex was constructed after the 1812 War when the British sailed up the Chesapeake and the US guns could not reach them. The forts enabled the Bay to be protected.
Monroe is not actually on an island, but is connected to the peninsula by a shoal. The shoal may have been the early access method.
Fort Wool, is located on an island.
Interestingly, Monroe housed Davis for a while, and the lead supervisor during construction was Lee.
