I did actually hear this story on the radio today.

I don't much care what the guy's political leanings are, for the exact same reasons I wouldn't stop to ask someone mugging me who he voted for in 2004.

If he was involved with child porn, he needs to go away for a long time.

I want you to seriously think about this question...

What research does someone possibly need to have images of child porn downloaded on their computer?...:

Children...naked...sex...

I've never see child porn and I got that down pat without downloading images...

I think that legitimate research can be done as far as levels of exploitation and the like, but I'm not so sure that this story pans out. I am willing to give the man the benefit of the doubt as he is innocent until proven guilty. We'll see if his case holds water in court. If his defense is sufficient to show him not guilty of the horrible crime he is accused of, I can only hope that he returns to work without lasting damage. If the man is guilty of the crime he has been accused of, then I think that prison will be his new venue, and hopefully it's a lifetime gig.

Like dabateman I'm saying he's not guilty yet. And this "research" has been mentioned as a possible defense. For the sake of argument, what if he is writing a book on people who download porn or why they do it or' does it lead
to other crimes' (like murder).
I doubt if he's innocent, because I'm automatically put off by people who get kicks out of baby porn.
I just wonder how they are going to defend this.

Can you name me times when it's OK to break the law in the name of research?...

Would you say the same thing if he was reasearching on what it feels like to rape someone so he goes out and does it?...

But you must admit that there is a difference of intent. Rape is one of those things that you generally have evidence to support one analysis or another. This really isn't the case. You know who the assailant is and you don't have a 'network' of rapists who get together and have online meetings about rape, trading pictures.

By doing the research that this person COULD HAVE been doing, we could have been using this information to bring down the networks. Perverted Justice? They are essentially researchers doing the same thing, getting into the world of the REAL offender to catch them.

I'm not saying that THIS specific individual was doing this, but it is a possibility and I don't think that we can punish someone for doing this type of research if it's used to bring down the network.

But doing that on your own without authority is inexcusable...

Just as if I were to bring a bomb on board an airplane so I could show the checkers what they're doing wrong...

If he was honest in his excuse he would've cleared it with the local law enforcement or at least had something noterized beforehand of his intent...

I agree that he should have done that, speaking frankly, it's these type of surprise investigations that keep the agencies on their toes and keeps them more effective.
