Default CNN forced to make another correction

This time Manu Raju reported that Don Trump Jr. received Wikileaks information about the DNC emails on Sept. 4, 2016 based on 2 anonymous sources who saw the document. Based on the faulty date, CNN goes on to speculate that Trump had inside info from Wikileaks before the it was available to the public. The actual date of the email was Sept. 14th, a day after the info was released publicly. Another preventable bloody nose for CNN who could've just waited for a visual of the email.

CNN was forced to correct a key error in a story about the Trump campaign and access to hacked Democratic National Committee emails on Friday, extending a run of high-profile media mistakes.

In an “exclusive” story posted to its website Friday morning — and discussed on air throughout the day — CNN initially reported that then candidate Donald Trump, his son Donald Trump, Jr. and other Trump campaign figures received an email on Sept. 4, 2016, offering a website and decryption key for the hacked WikiLeaks documents. That date was incorrect, though: CNN was later forced to correct it to Sept. 14, after a Washington Post report said the email had been sent then.

The timing is crucial because WikiLeaks released a trove of stolen DNC emails on Sept. 13. The error was the difference between the Trump campaign having advance access to the DNC emails — a potential scandal — and the campaign having access to emails already available publicly.

Upon making the correction, CNN issued a statement: “CNN's initial reporting of the date on an email sent to members of the Trump campaign about WikiLeaks documents, which was confirmed by two sources to CNN, was incorrect. We have updated our story to include the correct date, and present the proper context for the timing of email.”

The CNN story also originally cited a Sept. 4 tweet from Donald Trump, Jr., saying it was the first time he tweeted about WikiLeaks and Hillary Clinton.

The story now has a bolded correction affixed to its top, which reads: “This story has been corrected to say the date of the email was September 14, 2016, not September 4, 2016. The story also changed the headline and removed a tweet from Donald Trump Jr., who posted a message about WikiLeaks on September 4, 2016.”

It was the second major correction in a CNN story involving Trump and Russia. In June, three CNN journalists resigned after the retraction of a story about ties between Trump officials and a Russian investment fund. The network said the three had failed to follow its editorial procedures.

A CNN spokesperson said that the company is not taking action against the reporters involved in the latest correction, Manu Raju and Jeremy Herb: “There will not be any disciplinary action taken because every procedure put in place as part of the editorial process was followed,” the spokesperson said. “People don't get fired at CNN for making a mistake. They get fired when they don't follow editorial procedures.”

CBS News was also forced to correct the same error in its own later story on the email. The network declined further comment beyond its correction.

The Washington Post reported that the writer of the email was a person named Michael J. Erickson, who described himself as the president of an aviation management company.

After the Post had published its story with the correct date — but before CNN officially corrected its own — Trump Jr. taunted the network, tweeting: “What are the odds that @cnn has the decency to make a full retraction??? You know, a real one, not hidden on their website or with a 3am tweet. I’m guessing slim to none. #fakenews #notholdingmybreath.”

WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange also attacked CNN on Twitter, saying: “This is what has happened to CNN in the hands of Jeff Zucker+Jeff Bewkes. A joke of an organization even worse than ABC.”

So in the last week, ABC falsely reported that candidate Trump's team was talking to Russia, when it was actually president-elect Trump's transition team, which is something all presidents do...

Then multiple outlets were reporting that Deutsche Bank was subpoenaed for Trump's financial records, when it was actually the financial records of Paul Manafort...

And NOW we have CNN reporting that Donald Trump Junior received an email about documents from Wikileaks 10 days before they were made public, when it was actually the day after they were made public...

Seriously, my friends on the Left....Don't ever wonder why so many hate the media again...

I was wondering if Manu Raju would get an unpaid vacation like Ross at ABC but that apparently won't happen because "editorial guidelines" were followed. Is 2 anonymous sources the editorial standard and if so, how could both sources confirm the same wrong date?

[QUOTE]On Friday, the network said it would take no disciplinary action in this latest case, because the reporters, Manu Raju and Jeremy Herb, followed its editorial guidelines. Mr. Raju also appeared on-air on Friday afternoon to correct his prior report.[/QUOTE

When has Trump made a correction...that he didn't afterward recind?
How many times has fox faux news corrected itself in prime time?
people who admit their mistakes are more trustworthy than those who lie to your face and never admit it even after being called out.

This was another significant "journalistic" screw up at CNN. Glenn Greenwald at the Intercept characterizes yesterdays debacle as a "humiliation orgy". He points out that CBS and then MSNBC also started reporting on the story claiming to have "independently 'confirmed'" CNN's email story. So, did CBS and CNBC really verify CNN's story with the "2 unnamed sources", or did they just trust the CNN story and ride their coat tails. How many people were exposed to the bogus news story?

No, CNN and the other stalwart media purveyors of fake news are only interested in smearing President Trump. The truth shows there is no story when the accurate dates are used but their editorial process allowed the fake news to be published anyway. Worse, they issued a belated correction to the lie rather than retracting the whole story. That is not a media organization dedicated to the facts, it is one dedicated to disinformation.

a correction was made. that is journalism. you try your darndest in this environment of viral news to get the story first while vetting properly. you sometimes make mistakes. that also btw is called "working for a living."
