Media Cheers Obama Speech

Quote:
Several members of the media were seen cheering and clapping for Barack Obama as the Illinois senator accepted the Democratic nomination Thursday.

Standing on the periphery of the football field serving as the Democratic convention floor, dozens of men and women wearing green media floor passes chanted along with the crowd.

Two members of the foreign press exchanged opportunities to take each other's pictue while wearing an Obama hat and waving a flag.

Several others nearby screamed "woo" during some of Obama's biggest applause lines.
Objectivity...

Exactly. I found myself smiling through most of what I saw the first two days of the DNC. Then we pulled over to listen to his speech on the radio. The station was actually a TV channel you get sometimes on the radio. And one news guy (older dude) was gushing. They cut him off toward the end but he was hyped for sure.
Remember young people have not heard this kind of rhetoric from a candidate they felt connected to. And the oldsters remember Roosevelt and/or JFK.
While their's no great depression, there is that vaccuum created by poor health coverage that can wipe out a hard working families' savings. And many people work two jobs not to get ahead but to stay afloat. Because there aren't many good jobs left in America and we get tired of wearing and eating the crappy stuff that is imported. We put forth our energy to get back crap.
And that is why the words "hope" and "change" have new and rejeuvenated meaning for many people.
To put it in common redneck language (of which you no doubt noticed I am well versed):
We seen a light at the end of the tunnel onct; then the summbishch went dark on us...then somebodyheld up a bic lighter and said, "Come on, fellas, I'll show you the way out!"

Actually I couldn't help myself from busting out laughing(out loud) at the doc's office today when they repeated his line about "cutting taxes on 95% of taxpayers". It pleased me to look around the waiting room and see several others smiling.
What scares me is that some people could actually "believe" it.

Those that pay the most already should just go ahead and pay it all.

Silly liberals paychecks are for workers.

I pay a lot of taxes. I don't get a lot back for them. I am not poor enough and I'm not rich enough to get the good loop holes.

With a Democratic congress, Obama could cut taxes, by doing what he said he would do- cut spending a line at a time. Eliminate or reduce programs we no longer need or that are archaic.

And the health care he is proposing shouldn't cost anything. It is the Hillary plan that he has decided to adopt. Insurers compete for pools of clients like they do already with government employees.

Why not believe it? Just because you are not voting for someone doesn't mean their wrong.

Any chance you're going to actually try to disprove the statement?

why disprove anything when you can just be snide and condescending?

The president does not GET a line item veto. GW has been begging for it since before he took office.
Ask ANY democrat to NAME an actual program that they would be willing to cut. They only pretend in election years.
His line about giving US the same insurance that congress gets.......may I ask you "who" pays for it? Duh, WE do. They don't.
Insurance costs so much because we are forced to pay for coverage that we don't need that is mandated by gov. and for ALL of the litigation. Healthcare costs so much because those that pay have to pay for those that don't.
Gas costs so much because the oil companies first pay the gov to lease the land they then pay a royalty on every drop to the gov, they have to constantly fight in court against enviros, they then pay taxes and if you check you will discover that while Exxon makes an 8% profit (on which they pay a 50% tax rate also) the government is raking in about 65% of their gross and not doing ANY of the work.

And he won't get it...

The SC ruled it "unconstitutional"...

Quote:
Presidents have repeatedly asked Congress to give them a line item veto power. According to Louis Fisher in The Politics of Shared Power, Ronald Reagan said to Congress in his 1986 State of the Union address, "Tonight I ask you to give me what forty-three governors have: Give me a line-item veto this year. Give me the authority to veto waste, and I'll take the responsibility, I'll make the cuts, I'll take the heat." Bill Clinton echoed the request in his State of the Union address in 1995.

The President was briefly granted this power by the Line Item Veto Act of 1996, passed by Congress in order to control "pork barrel spending" that favors a particular region rather than the nation as a whole. The line-item veto was used 11 times to strike 82 items from the federal budget by President Bill Clinton.

However, U.S. District Court Judge Thomas F. Hogan ruled on February 12, 1998, that unilateral amendment or repeal of only parts of statutes violated the U.S. Constitution. This ruling was subsequently affirmed on June 25, 1998, by a 6-3 decision of the Supreme Court of the United States in the case Clinton v. City of New York. The case was brought by the then New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani.
the only option I see is this...

A president gets a bill from Congress...Instead of passing it, he vetoes it, but runs red lines through every part that's crap (pork barrel stuff, etc)...Then he PUBLICLY shows it to the press and says "If they respond to this by sending me a bill that does NOT contain the lines I went over with my red pen, then I'll sign it."...

I don't know if that's ever been done...I'm scared that if it's tried, the Congress would say "no" and have a super-majority vote which overrides the president's veto...

Shows you how much I trust Congress...
