Redd, I live 50 miles from Birmingham. I don't spend a lot of time there, as I don't like big cities, but I have seen gay couples showing affection in public there. (I have also seen it in Montgomery, Auburn, Opelika, Cullman, and Decatur -- all in Alabama and all smaller cities than B'ham.) Maybe we are not defining "showing affection" the same way. I am assuming that they are talking about hand-holding, hugging or maybe a short kiss. I can't say that I have ever seen a couple doing any major making out. But I have seldom seen straight couples doing that in public either.

Which is a point to be made... If the responses are a complete non-issue, would the story run?...Of course not... Controversy sells...you would never see this... "Today we take a close look at people's reaction to same-sex affection...No one cared...it's a non-issue."... That film would take 10 seconds to find the trashbin... I wonder how many social experiments news outlets have done where this has happened...

I agree controversy sells. I also posit that the media et al (i.e. politics, religion...) sells the rest of humanity short as well. They play up stories they know will sell (it's ALWAYS been about ratings & membership) and they know what buttons to push on a complacent and somewhat naive/easily manipulated public. It all boils down to where do we spend our advertising dollars. And what will and won't we tolerate being shoved on us. And it's as simple as do you shop at American Eagle or JCPenney. And I also know that comment will be lost on a few, but it is all of our faults for not knowing the politics we support! We are hideously unaware (and I'm not completely always sure either) of the underlying politics of where we shop. If the part of the world that is so fuggin angry at itself would just go to--say the North or South Pole to implode and let the rest of the world live in peace and shop devoid of politics that would be a very good thing. If the responses were a complete non-issue, the story would, more likely, be run from a different angle. One of 'see how much progress has happened in the last X years.' I agree that controversy sells. Why? Because news services are a BUSINESS. Their purpose is to attract readers/veiwers which in turn bring in more advertising dollars. That is the nature of the beast. Don't kick a dog for barking; that is what they are supposed to do. In the end, the people who are buying the papers are more at fault than the media. If people were not interested in controversy, then the media would change its strategy. |

Here's a good example of exactly what's going on here...
Which makes a better thread... 1) ABC News does blind video survey of responses to homosexuals public affection. -or- 2) That damned mainstream media sensationalizes journalism by creating false responses to homosexuals showing public affection. |

Thanks KOS. That thought has been in the back of my mind since I read the story -- except not so well formed. More along the lines of, "And exactly why is FOX reporting on this?"
