Post CBS splices McCain interview clip, expunging his false claim on surge timeline

On the July 22 edition of the CBS Evening News, while airing portions of an interview she conducted that day with Sen. John McCain, anchor Katie Couric removed a part of his response in which he falsely asserted that the 2007 U.S. troop surge "began the Anbar awakening." In fact, the so-called Anbar awakening reportedly began in September 2006, months before the surge was even announced. Couric had asked McCain, "Senator [Barack] Obama says while the increased number of U.S. troops contributed to increased security in Iraq, he also credits the Sunni awakening and the Shia government going after militias, and says that there might have been improved security even without the surge. What's your response to that?" But rather than airing McCain's direct reply, including the false claim that the surge "began the Anbar awakening" -- an agreement by some tribal leaders in western Iraq to accept U.S. aid and cooperate with anti-Al Qaeda operations -- Couric aired comments by McCain spliced together from three separate statements he gave during the interview, one of which responded to a different question. Couric gave no indication that these comments had been edited in any manner, nor did she otherwise note McCain's falsehood.

Just another example of how the media screws John McCain and favors Obama...

And why the heck isn't the media providing more coverage of McCain's visit to a Bethlehem PA grocery store??? Isn't that just as important as Obama's supposed "200,000" Germany crowd???
It was probably made up mostly of the MSM!!!
Stumper : Smalley: Scenes from a Bethlehem Supermarket

And obviously McCain's trip to visit a Republican ex-president Bush Sr is just as important as the people that Obama is meeting with overseas...

Fricken media bias!
At least I can expect "fair and balanced" from Fox News.

Breaking News!
McCain has picked up the "Dole" endorsement...

Unfortunately, the media does this across the board...

Their "defense" is that A) Time is a factor when doing interviews on TV...and B) The full video is available online so they're not hiding anything. (Both weak excuses IMO)...

The very same thing was done recently with Bush and NBC...with the very same excuse that the REAL interview is only a click away...

White House complains about Bush interview

Quote:
NEW YORK - The White House on Monday called on NBC News to set the record straight on "deceitful" editing of an interview with President Bush, in which correspondent Richard Engel asks whether comments about the president of Iran were directed at Barack Obama.

Bush aides were angered by how the president's answer was portrayed when Engel questioned him about his condemnation of "the false comfort of appeasement" in an address last week to the Israeli Knesset. NBC stood by its treatment of the interview Monday...

...As it appeared on "Nightly News" Sunday and the "Today" show Monday, Bush's response was: "You know, my policies haven't changed, but evidently the political calendar has ... And when, you know, a leader of Iran says that they want to destroy Israel, you've got to take those words seriously."

But the White House said NBC edited out these words that Bush said between those two sentences: "People need to read the speech. You didn't get it exactly right, either. What I said was that we need to take the words of people seriously."...

...NBC countered by saying the unedited interview has been available since Sunday on the network's Web site, and that the reporting accurately reflects the interview. The extra sentences by Bush were included during a report on Sunday's "Today" show.

Capus replied that there was no effort to be deceptive and called Gillespie's criticism a gross misrepresentation of the facts.

"Just as the White House does not participate in the editorial process at the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal or USA Today, NBC News, as part of a free press in a free society, makes its own editorial decisions," NBC said in a statement.
This isn't a blatant attempt to push one candidate or another...It's a practice used by the media to condense (and very wrong)...
